Should I wait till after my vacation plans to get an IUD?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) August 18th, 2017

I’ve decided to get a hormonal IUD. I’ve never had one before, so I don’t know if I’ll have any side effects.

I kind of want to get it out of the way ASAP, but I also have quite a lot going on in upcoming months. September is mostly quiet, but I have pleasure trip planned for late October and a business trip in November. In December I imagine I’ll be traveling to see family at Christmastime. So if I wait it probably won’t happen till January.

Should I try to get the IUD in September? Or should I wait till after my trips in case I end up having to deal with nasty side-effects? I don’t want to ruin my trips.

In the meantime I’m on birth control pills, so I’m not worrying I’ll get pregnant if I wait, I just kind of want the ordeal out of the way.

Rate the consequences on the Ordeal-O-Meter. With your medical history of all sorts of weird and stupid gut stuff, if you have consequences, would the Ordeal not be worse if you were out of town or celebrating the holidays and weird stuff started happening? I vote to wait til January.

A loooooong time ago I had an IUD and it was Dark Ages stuff and they practically had cast iron torture devices to insert such things and…it really wasn’t that big a deal. Nowadays, I doubt you’d barely notice it’s insertion.

Oh, and I’m a big whiny baby.

Yeah I’m mostly just worried about normal-people side-effects like unpredictable period or mood changes, but knowing my body, my IUD will probably figure out some way to puncture a lung or something, lmao

Dealing with side effects while on vacation would put a damper on things. I don’t know how quickly side effects will reveal themselves – maybe all of September and most of October is enough time to deal with things? I dunno. There’s no real need to rush this.

Lmao @ cast iron torture devices!!

My best friend had some pretty severe cramping for a day or so after she had hers inserted, and my gynecologist, who has one herself, pretty much straight up told me that insertion would hurt really bad. That doesn’t matter to me so much as long as it’s short-term but if anything decides to be wonky for weeks or months afterwards I’m going to be grumpy about that.

Little grumpy’s OK. You so rarely exhibit anything but grace even during your dire events, that I think you’ll sail through the insertion. Maybe a rude word or two. And I know for a fact that lung puncturing-by-an-IUD only happens in months ending in “er”. :-)

Well, my daughter didn’t have any luck with it. Caused her a lot of problems. If you can, I say wait.

I’d wait. I know a lot of people who have problems with the hormones. Can you get an IUD that doesn’t have hormones? I don’t understand why they add the hormones.

I remember one jelly here was very happy with it, so there are people out there who are happy.

I could get a copper IUD, yeah, but they normally cause heavier periods, whereas the hormone ones cause lighter/sometimes no period at all, which is a perk for me since I’m chronically anemic.

I’m already on hormonal birth control, which I deal with fine, so I have that going for me. Doc says IUDs normally cause less side effects than pills because the hormones go straight into the cervix/uterus rather than traveling there through your bloodstream first.

I’ll wait though. Just in case. Thanks for the input!

Coming up next….@Mariah’s gonna have a Jelly Baby!!!!

I guess it’s a crapshoot with any hormones. I did fine on birth control, like I wasn’t taking anything, until they switched me to a pill that sucked and I felt crazy. You won’t know until you try. One girlfriend of mine lost a lot of hair with Mirena and her periods did not get lighter, which she really wanted. Other people notice mood changes or feeling out of sorts. Other women do great with it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That’s why she wants to wait until.after her vacation plans.

Yeah I’m scared of having some kind of subtle mood change because my moods are already shit enough most of the time and I might not realize it’s the IUD. I was thinking of getting Nexplanon because I’m honestly squeamish about having a little stick up my hoohah during sex (it’s kinda hilarious to me that I’m still squeamish about normal people medical stuff at this point in my life) but I heard way too much shit about people being depressed and/or bleeding constantly with Nexplanon. Seems less common but still possible with hormonal IUD.

I did switch which BC pill I took at one point because the first one I tried made me sweat like mad while sleeping. This one still does that to me a little bit, but not as bad.

The only risk with waiting I guess is that I’m on antibiotics so my BC is less effective. We always use condoms too though. I don’t worry too much. But that’s a big part of why I’m switching.

JLeslie's avatar

@Mariah Are you on a BC pill that isn’t the same dose all 21 days, or one of those mini pills? I really think those newer pills/lower dose pills cause more moodiness and crazy feelings.

Mariah's avatar

Same dose all 21 days. Originally I was on one that was different doses but that’s the one that made me sweat like mad and that I stopped.

Womp womp today I’m having symptoms of a new rectovaginal fistula. I better talk to my GI before getting any foreign objects inserted up there. Never a dull moment in my dumbass body.

That sucks.
