Please help me come up with a thesis for my essay Nature verses Nurture?

Unless your assignment is different than you described (for example, if you were told to write about a smaller issue that is related to the nature vs. nurture debate), then taking a side pretty much tells you what your thesis is. Either you think the environment has more impact than genetics, or you think that genetics has more impact than the environment.

So if you have already chosen the “nurture” side of the debate, then your thesis is “the environment plays a bigger role in a person’s personality” (although I might tidy it up to something like “the social environment in which a person is raised has more of an impact on someone’s personality than their genetics”).

Saying you choose one side of the debate demonstrates one-dimensional thinking, and would tend to be less interesting than a thesis that contrasts the two in a more interesting way that expresses understanding and appreciation of the value of considering the subject from alternate perspectives without turning it into a competition between perspectives..

A thesis for a compare/contrast essay can be developed from a core of “what do I have to say about A? Now about B? How are those similar or different? And then, hopefully, what is interesting about considering them both? What is interesting to think about that takes that sort of thinking further?”

@Zaku Note that this is a middle school writing assignment and that @Natasha2121 says choosing a side was part of the assignment.

Also, it’s not a compare/contrast essay. It’s more about cause & effect.
