Can one stock up on rotisserie chickens?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24452points) September 2nd, 2017

I eat one a day. I have room for 4 in the freezers and more if I ditch the food rotting that I’m not going to eat . I’m looking for a streamlined and simple food storage solution. How long should they last in a freezer?

Yes. Most anything can be frozen indefinitely. I would simply cut the chicken in pieces and put them in a ziploc bag. They should last about 4–6 months, possibly longer but no more than a year.

Ok I am thinking of getting bulk thighs with back attached, and putting them in a freezer bags. Or cooked chicken and separating the pieces.

Don’t put them in the freezer still hot. They will freezee burn that way. But, don’t leave them in the fridge or counter top for long either. Chicken goes bad quickly. Freeze as soon as you can. If you purchase them cooked, but then refrigerated, You should go ahead and freeze them right away.

I like the steps you are taking to organize your life better.
I am actually working some changes in my own freezer this weekend.
I have a big bundle of hamburger I just bought. I am going to make a biiiiig batch of sloppy joe meat, then freeze it in ziplock bags. That way, easy warm sandwiches later, just nuke, and plop on a bun.

Yes, cooked chicken is fine also. Be sure to squeeze the air out of the bags.

Seems like a rotisserie chicken would lose a lot of its appeal after it had been frozen, thawed and re heated.

Plus, bet when you factor in the energy cost to do that, it would make the chicken more expensive than it is worth.

If it were me, I would give up the idea of storing them and simply buy as needed.

@josie I might think about buying one or two every second day.

Going to co-op and getting chicken thighs with back attached now thanks everyone. Edit home now. Got $30 worth of food. $8 for four chicken thighs with back attached, and $22 tin foil and other stuff like zip lock containers and juice and jello cheese cake and veggie platter with dip and beef stew and meat ball stew.

Also 2 hungry man rib dinners. for $47.26 not $30. I walked so I saved $20 in taxi fares.

If you can seal them to keep them from drying out, they should last in the freezer for an extended amount of time. 6 months, 1 or 2 years. Turn them occasionally to keep them from completely drying out on one side (the moisture goes to the coldest side.)

Ok I tried the uncooked chicken thighs with back attached. Was gross. I will stick to the pre-cooked chicken from now on.

I cook chicken thighs (or what-have-you) in the oven. Try it.
Salt chicken at least ½ hour before baking. Line a pan with aluminum foil, place chicken, skin side up, therein. Sprinkle with black pepper. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. With oven preheated, place chicken in oven and bake for 45 minutes. Remove form oven, let sit for 15 minutes, pig out. Refrigerate leftovers.
I can usually find chicken thighs and or legs at the grocers, on sale, for $ .99 a pound.
You can always try Shake and Bake coating for oven baked chicken.

Wait! You eat a whole chicken in a day?!
At my house. a chicken lasts 2 people 2 days!
I just bought one and took some measurements. Mine weighted 947 grams. 161 grams were bone and inedible bits leaving 786 grams of meat.
At 160 calories per 85 grams (one serving) that chicken is 1479 calories! You probably are not very active. so you should be getting about 2400 calories per day.
At most you should be eating half a chicken. Make it last 2 days!
What else do you eat for the rest of the day?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@LuckyGuy I eat a tuna kit and a cliff bar and juice boxes. Maybe a beef stew.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 Have you calculated the calories? Juice boxes are surprisingly high.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@LuckyGuy 90 calories each.

Update I have been cooking chicken quarters in my electric frying pan and they taste awesome. I am stocking up on food on the first week of December. Might get uncooked chicken wings and quarters in club packs. Inflation is increasing the costs of meats. So I will see what I can do then.

I am open to advice on food shopping.
I might stock up on frozen peas and carrots.
I am cancelling my meals on on wheels on Monday.
