Should I tell my doctor about my social anxiety?

Asked by Lois0987 (73points) September 7th, 2017

So I’m going to the doctors for a yearly checkup at the beginning of every school year. I’m still in high school and I’m certain I have social anxiety but I haven’t been officially diagnosed and I’m not sure who I should look to so I can get help. ( I want help so I can’t get through a day happy) I can’t do public speaking, it’s hard making/maintaining friends and so much more etc. etc. I can’t tell my mother because she’s “old fashioned” as my older cousin (also has anxiety) says. she won’t completely understand why I’m always nervous even when I know I don’t need to be. So to get to my question; should I just tell my doctor? I know she’d have to go through my mom if I wanted help but I was thinking of taking medication too and see If that helps

does it cost less than weekly therapy? Because my mom definitely won’t pay for every week

Yes. Tell your doctor. I don’t know that she would need to go through your mother to help you. Your communication with your doctor should be private. Explain your concerns about costs for therapy too. Your doctor may have some ideas or solutions to help you.

Can you talk to your school counsellor too? Again, their conversations with you are private. And they will have experience of how to help you and I feel sure, resources they can refer you to if they feel that’s necessary.

Don’t be afraid to reach out. It’s the first step to finding a solution to your anxiety. You are not alone. Many people suffer with social anxiety.

@Lois0987 I think I’d tell your doctor, explaining how this anxiety affects you in several areas. @Earthbound_Misfit has good advice! Do what you need to do for you! Hugs!

Ask your doctor to recommend a psychologist or some other type of counselor to help you. And I would suggest your not talking to any family members until you have a plan in place.

Yes, tell your doctor. It should be in confidence.

Absolutely. Tell your doctor. Just be warned: It may take a couple of different medications to try and relieve your anxiety. The positive part is that you are able to feel which medication is working for you. It just may take time. But you would have made the right step to tell your doctor.

You will not have to tell a good doctor because he or she will know just by your mannerisms. But since you are troubled by your condition it would be a good idea to tell your doctor about it.

Two family practice doctors have diagnosed me with having an “anxiety problem”. One asked me if I would like a prescription drug to control it and the other doctor just prescribed Lorazepam and said take it of leave it. I left it.

I don’t think that I have an anxiety problem. I may have anxiety but it is not a problem for me. I just have a nervous personality. I don’t need to take drugs to become more acceptable to others. This is who I am. And I’m OK with that.
