(Possibly NSFW) Why are so many female teachers sleeping with their students?

Asked by Zissou (3374points) September 21st, 2017

It seems I’ve seen a lot of news stories about female K-12 teachers in the US sleeping with their students in the last year or two. Is this sort of thing really much more common now than it used to be, and if so, why?

Because women can be rapists and perverts too. I don’t think it’s much more common, I think they’re getting caught and called out more now.

I think it is because for years, an adult male having sex with a minor girl was considered rape (a felony) while an adult female having sex with a minor boy was considered contributing to the delinquency of a minor (a misdemeanor). Because the penalties were much, much lighter, we, as society, set the tacit acceptance of these acts.

Yeah I saw another story today. I don’t think it used to be a big deal. I know many of the guys would consider themselves lucky.

@seawulf575 Very true. I mean there are movies and music talking about getting it on with your teacher specifically if it is a attractive female teacher with a young male student it’s no big deal.

Reserve the roles and it becomes exact opposite. It is a bit disturbing when you REALLY think about it.

@Dutchess_III Kids sleep with their own teachers?!?!?!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Um well it’s mainly.a high school thing. And it’s teachers sleeping with their students. I had two male teachers, one in middle school and one in high school, who would have slept with me in a heartbeat. The one in high school would have slept with a lot of the girls. He was a known horndog among the girls.

Men. Usually. I have had grown men hitting on me since I was 12. I mean GROWN men. Old enough to be my father. Gross.

I think that I’m about to jump out my window. This is crazy

For women and girls it’s a fact of life.

The responses of the men and womesn are very different.

@Dutchess_III – That’s really disturbing to know. I always wonder how women can live normal life under such circumstances. This is true for women around the world. I’m curious to know if there’s any ranking of countries based on how women are treated?

In high school I had an English teacher who was 24. Fresh, shiny new teaching certificate.

The boys went mad over her.

She ended up married to the basketball coach before the first year was out.

24 is so young to be in charge of 17 year olds…

Well, compare America and Iran @imrainmaker. In Iran rape is ignored to the extent that the women suffer punishment more than the men. Same with India. Compare their rankings to America or Sweden or Candida.

I had a teacher in HS, about that same age. She ended up dating on of her students, a guy who was in my class. She would up marrying him. They way she’d talk about him, like a gushing, blushing girl was so WEIRD. All the girls would be gathered around her desk and she’d giggle and talk about the things Jessie said to her, how he said it, how he kissed her. So weird.

Oh, and normal is relative @imrainmaker. When you don’t know anything else it’s not abnormal.

Thanks for your responses.

It’s funny that I forgot about Emmanuel Macron when I wrote this question (current president of France; married one of his teachers).

I’m not opposed to intergenerational romance in principle, but it’s a violation of professional ethics for teachers of either sex to do this. I fear no good will come of it if people start winking at it and letting it slide.

I also notice that in these news items, the teachers are generally under 35 and not unattractive. It seems they could get a man over 18 if they wanted to. It makes me wonder what is going on.

Lightlyseared's avatar

I’m guessing it always happened but it’s reported more now and (more importantly) those reports are taken more seriously now.

Dutchess_III's avatar

The guys could be hitting on her too. They hit on me when I taught HS. For some it would be a status symbol to sleep with the teacher.
The problem isn’t with the kids over 18. It’s the minors.

LornaLove's avatar

In deviant sexual behaviors, it is common for the perpetrator to seek out a position that puts them in contact with the desired target. For example, necrophiliacs will work at a morgue etc., I think now there are more female teachers than before. Also, it is showing us that deviancy is higher in females than one first thought.

Zissou's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yes of course the problem is with the minors. That’s my point! Maybe some grown men try to date teenagers because they are losers who are unable to attract women their age. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with these women teachers. Superficially, at least, it looks like they ought to be able to attract men who are 18+ and have finished HS, so why are they sleeping with minors?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Because they are in contact with them every day?
