Can you help me with some ideas please?

Hi! I’m a little bit off with my creativity right now and I need to design a book cover for a practical class. The book is called La Profecía Autocumplida by Gabriel García Márquez, The Self-fulfilling prophecy would be the title in English. The author narrates a story about an old lady who starts a rumour about her town, repeating that something bad is going to happen. The gossip gets bigger and bigger between the people of the town ‘till they get really scared and leave everything behind (their houses, jobs, plus they burn everything down.)

My question is: How would you design a book cover taking into account the rumour and some aspects of the story using rhetoric of the images? I’ve tried a lot of things but they get too literal and again, my creativity is blocked.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

I would base the image on the Pied Piper of Hamelin leading the people of the town away from their burning houses. The people could be shown gossiping to each other in twos and threes as they hurry along.

When I’m blocked and don’t have an idea I like yet, I usually try to sketch every small idea that I have, that might be part of the whole, and then filter from there.

So I’ll literally just set an alarm for say 30 minutes and then sketch anything that pops in my mind. Usually some shape brings to mind something else and then exploring that is what ends up leading to a new direction that I actually like.

Alternatively, get out of your head for a bit and explore what else is out there. Dribbble is amazing at this if you’re stuck inside, but the outside world is even better if you can find an area with a lot of work on display. Your school may have something along those lines?

If you’re tight on time, remember minimalist book covers are pretty popular, but take some analysis to break your story down to a core idea. If you can sneak in a hidden meaning that’s not immediately obvious until the story is done, even better.

A lot of the concepts in the book are very timely right now, there’s a lot to work with there.
