Do you know anyone who does this while giving directions? (details inside)

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24462points) September 29th, 2017

For example when telling directions, in a big city, (1 million people) not to use the first number. Like 17th ave instead of 117 ave . I know people who do that. Is that something that was normal in the past?

I have never heard of anyone using that short handed way of saying ordinal street names. Especially not in New York, there people have given me directions as “West Hundred twenty eighth at Broadway”,

I never heard this, and I spent a lot of time in the East Bay, where the avenues are over 150.

Maybe once or twice when being really hasty, but generally not.

Like maybe:

Driver: Do I turn on 117th or 118th?
Navigator: …seventeenth!

I don’t know anyone who does that.

When we do abbreviate, we usually omit the type of street.

E.g., instead of saying something’s at Woodman Ave and Riverside Drive, we’ll say it’s at Woodman and Riverside.

I’ve never heard anyone do that.
