Can we pay our respects to someone who won't be "comin' 'round here no more"?

Asked by rojo (24179points) October 4th, 2017

This week we lost another voice that was part of the soundtrack for the lives of many of us who were and still are rock fans:

Tom Petty. RIP Bro.

Can you give a shout out to the song that you first think of when you think of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers?

It’s very strange because I keep hearing Tom Petty songs that I always thought were Jackson Browne songs. I’m very confused.

I hope he had “one last dance with Mary Jane,” before he left. This is another gut punch from 2017.

Trace well brother(Tom):)

I liked his work with the Traveling Wilburys. Who knew he could combine with Bob Dylan for backing vocals?

Yeah, man. He was a big part of the soundtrack of my life for a long time. RIP TP.

Tom Petty was the first rocker that I was ever fully aware of.
My (late) parents were Beatles fans, and I heard that music as a little kid.
When it came time to choose my own musical tastes, it makes sense that I liked the the two guitars, bass, (keyboard) ensemble.
And Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were sort of like an extension of my parents tastes into my childhood.
I loved that that band.
I feel bad he is gone.
Plus, he was only a little younger than my dad would have been.

One of my favorite Petty tunes is Refugee.

According to this article, he did an interview for Rolling Stone condemning the Confederate flag and private prisons.

Breakdown. I have vivid memories of that tune in the background of my life back then. So long to a humble legend and just plain decent human being.

On reflection, you could also be talking about the Goose Lady.
Looks like she won’t be comin round here no more either.

rojo's avatar

No, I thought of that @josie and am hoping that will not be the case.

…...........the whole episode seems kinda “Petty”.

I did a Tom Petty post the other day, the day he died.

janbb's avatar

Yes, I was going to point that out.

I wasn’t a great fan of his music BUT this one song he did I really like just sort of hit me in more ways than one….

It is an insult to the talent and songwriting genius of Tom Petty to compare his loss, at the young age of 66, to the loss of someone on this site who was banned for good reason.

rojo's avatar

You can find insult in anything if that is what you choose to search for.

Maybe that’s why there are those who oppose funding for the SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Insults) project. ;-)
