What is the proper way to wear shirt garters?

Asked by SergeantQueen (12874points) October 5th, 2017

I recently bought shirt garters to tuck my shirt into my skirt, I know how to put them on the shirt and how to wear them, my main question is this: Is it possible to put the garters on so that I can still use the restroom? It took my 20 minutes to put them on, and I couldn’t pee for like 8 hours because I didn’t have time to take them all off and put them back on again. The clips are sort of weird, and are hard to put on without the shirt slipping out of the clip and bunch of times, which is why it took me so long to put them on.

Well, for just peeing you can pull your underwear to the side….

I wish I could say I knew for sure… I never knew these were a thing before today! I saw on some videos that they attach in several places to the shirt, and then on the other end they attach to the top of socks? (But that was under pants, so maybe it’s different with a skirt.)

One idea I had, though it may not be any easier (and assuming this isn’t something you already tried)... Maybe detach the garters from the socks, rather than the shirt? And then lift garters and skirt up when you take a seat rather than lowering the skirt down—(and having to go through the process of untucking and re-tucking the shirt). I’m imagining you’d be able to clip the garter back in place on the socks/stockings/whatever and just lower the skirt back down, rather than having to reposition everything again (which I imagine would take a long time!)

Again, not sure if it would work, just an idea.

Another thought I had is maybe speed simply comes with practice? Not a reassuring thought in the beginning, though…

I used to dance, and had to do many quick-changes behind stage. It’s not quite the same as what you’re trying to do, but the premise to make things quicker was always the same: reduce the number of moving pieces-parts in whatever ways possible.

@Soubresaut Thanks for your advice. I unable to hook them to socks, because I don’t wear socks with my shoes in my skirt. I am definitely going to try working on getting them on faster, I thought about putting the garters on under my underwear, but not sure how well that would work…

What are you clipping them onto right now?

(Is it something you could detach from/reattach to relatively easily? If so, I’d still try to detach the garters from that one point on each leg, than from two or three points on either side of the shirt.)

It sounds like you have some ideas on how to set up the garters differently. I’d say go ahead and try those ideas when you’re at home. See what you can figure out works (and what doesn’t). With each experiment, try doing a bunch of the activities you do throughout the day—and more—to see if it stays in place.

Same with undoing/redoing. Try out some options and see what’s simplest… Think of it as dress rehearsals! And look for ways to reduce the number of pieces you have to fix/adjust.

It is an elastic band that I step into, and it wraps around my upper thigh. I put one clip on the front, side, and back of my shirt for both legs. I can’t detach the band. The only way to take it off is to take the clips off the shirt.

1. Can you wriggle the thigh bands down enough to scrunch your panties down to pee?

2. Failing that, do you need the garters at all? Most of us manage to keep our shirt tucked in without.

@SergeantQueen Is it possible to unhook the two back straps only, allowing you to lower your panties enough to get the stuff done?

Soubresaut's avatar

Oh, that’s why they’re called shirt garters! Aha, got it now.

@janbb‘s idea of wriggling down the thigh bands or @si3tech‘s idea of unhooking only the back straps sound like they could be promising?

I can definitely try those ideas. Thanks guys

@janbb It’s for my uniform for CAP, and I get better inspection scores if everything is tucked nice, and stays tucked.

Put the garters on, then put your panties on.

Panties over the garters. That will also keep the shirt smooth and tucked (we always did that back in high school – shirt into the panties and then whatever else we wore.
