How often do you flag comments or questions and why?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46812points) October 7th, 2017

I almost never flag a comment because someone is being mean to me. I think I’ve flagged 3 in the years I’ve been here, and that was early on.
I reserve my flagging for spam or a REALLY badly worded question.

What about you?

I only ever do this when I see comments that if i’d made would’ve certainly been removed, only then when it’s blatantly inconsistent & downright ridiculous.
Don’t flag nowt else because i’m never offended or arsed to do so.

when I disagree with their opinion

Spam or personal attacks. Spam because, well, it’s annoying. And personal attacks because 100% of the time they are unneeded and just plain rude

DominicY's avatar

Very rarely. The last time I did it was obvious trolling. Otherwise I almost never do.

I often flag spam when I see it (usually late at night is when it appears PST). I sometimes flag Q’s and A’s when they seem like egregious flame bait or personal attacks. I might flag something that I suspect is a troll, and I will send a comment along with the flag, asking that it be looked at more closely to see if it is a troll, and will give examples of why I think it is a troll.

I think I’ve only ever flagged one and that was a long time ago.

Spam only.

99% of the time – spam

I used a flag once as I couldn’t figure out how else to contact the moderators. I just found out yesterday who the moderators were.

I wouldn’t use it for regular personal attacks. People are supposed to be grownups. If they can’t handle an on-line grump/dust-up, I think they need to stay off discussion boards.

Hyderabad.
And the occasional mean spirited comment addressed to someone else in a thread.
I don’t think I have ever gotten such comments myself.
So, have at it, bastards! ~

I flag spam, personal attacks and if a general question has gone totally off track. These days, things I’ve flagged beyond spam appear to be ignored.

I don’t have a problem with flagging. I have a problem with permanently banning. I’m even okay with time-outs/suspensions to allow parties to calm down. Permanent bans should be, and historically have been, applied only for extreme breaches of rules. For example, using multiple accounts to mislead the community by presenting as different personas, actually threatening other members or sexually harassing members. Permanent bans shouldn’t be used to resolve disputes between individuals. They shouldn’t be used to remove people who hold unusual or controversial views. It appears recent bans fall into this latter category.

LOL @Michael_Huntington! I flag them if I don’t like their avatar!

I don’t remember flagging anything except spam (which I do often – whenever I notice spam and no one else has posted that they’ve flagged it yet) and terrible questions, or things that needed corrections, including my own when I’ve posted to the wrong question or something.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Never. I’m a big boy. If I have a problem with what someone says, I usually mention it on that thread. Or start a new thread about what I took issue with.

I flag from time to time, as I figure everyone should take a turn washing the dishes. If the mods don’t see something, they can’t decide stuff. I know when I flag it’s just a heads up, but when I see discussions going south, or blatant bullying going on, I’ll flag. If the post or Q is unintelligible, I’ll flag. If a discussion, even in Social devolves into a long, off-topic chat between two users, I’ll flag.
I get called uncomplimentary names for doing that. I really don’t worry about that unless they are so clever and creative that I admire them. Very very rare.

I’ve started flagging more the longer I’ve been here. For years I didn’t flag anything, even obvious spambot spam. I was worried about seeming… I’m not even sure. But I’ve become more comfortable with it over time.

I know that my flagging something only brings it to the mods’ attention, and I figure it’s better flag things when I’m worried about them than to assume that it’s not my problem, or to assume that someone else already took care of it. Even then, I don’t think I flag that often.

I don’t flag at all when I’m on my phone (because, unless I’m mistaken, there isn’t a way to flag on the mobile version of the site?)

longgone's avatar

[Mod says] Flags are never annoying and always welcome. The system groups them, so we don’t get alerted for the same issue twice. Please, keep flagging.

Soubresaut's avatar

^^Teehee! I was just editing that worry of mine out of my response!

It’s good to know about the grouping. I definitely assumed each separate flag was a separate alert.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Yeah. I just remembered that one reason I don’t flag is because I can’t. I always use the mobile version…
