Do you have a possession that makes you happy?

Asked by janbb (62859points) November 9th, 2017

I know possessions aren’t supposed to provide happiness but I am inordinately joyful when I see the new handmade quilt I have on my bed. A Jelly friend’s spouse made it and it is so vibrant and lovely that it gives me a thrill.

Do you have any recent or older purchases that have brightened your life?

My clock radio that I’ve had since I was 12. First thing I bought with my own money , was GE $19.99 from Consumers Distributing.

I have a shower clock that my mom gave me when I bought my first house 34 years ago. It still works and is in my shower. I always get happy when I have to change the time and think of my mom.

I have in my kitchen a little ceramic sun, from Spain I think, that I got in a little import shop in my town. It’s just so cheerful, and I bought it when a young friend was working there, so it reminds me of her, as well.

Yes. It plugs into the wall. It makes me very happy.

I bought this inkin bell earlier this year for my meditation practice. It is difficult to express how much it enriches the whole experience. I had no idea I would love it this much.

@Hawaii_Jake My Qi Gong teacher uses one of those.

@ragingloli I knew someone would go there! Thank you.

My mother’s Christmas village. She had a very large collection of ceramics that she painted herself. My father kept a few of the pieces but gave the rest to me after she passed away. I keep the village up all winter. My father keeps his collection up year round.

My mother was cremated and did not have a burial. I don’t have a location to mourn her. Looking at her village whether at my home or my father’s makes me feel close to my mom and brings me so much joy.

Yes, in fact it’s a consideration in whether I acquire or keep anything, though I have some hoarding tendencies (it also sometimes displeases me to throw things out that could have a use).

Many of the things that please me are things given to me or inherited from others. Others are old possessions, or just well-made or beautiful things, or things I feel an affinity for.

Sure. I have a Don Quixote statue I got in Puerto Rico that reminds me of that trip (I was the best man at a wedding) and of my favorite musical — Man of La Mancha.

I have a bronze dragon I got in Guongxuo China that reminds me of that trip, when we adopted my daughter.

I have a statue of the Winged Nike from the Louvre which reminds me of our trip to Paris and my favorite museum.

I keep them all in my office.

My banjo and my telescope. Although recently they’ve both been pissing me off.

I don’t suppose I do.
I used to.
The last couple of years what gives me joy is getting little happy things for myself, like pretty scarves, my dancing baby Groot, five foot strings of lights that are battery operated and can be used anywhere, a vitual zoo I can play with on my xbox.

I am poor. My health is gone. Giving myself happy little trinkets is my joy now.

My dog, though to be honest, I don’t think of him as a possession.

I forgot to mention my walking shoes. I paid a bit more for them than usual but it was worth it as they are extraordinarily comfortable.
