Is Bitcoin a horrible Christmas present?

Asked by johnpowell (17881points) December 7th, 2017

Some backstory here. I hate cryptocurrencies. However a few years ago I saw something about a new one called Stellar and to get you into it they would give you some for just providing a email and password. I thought .. Fuck it. Maybe someday it will be worth something.

I signed up and thought nothing more of it until today.

Then I saw it was up 40%. Up 40% to 17 cents. I had no idea how many coins I actually had. I figured it was something like 3. So I checked. It was actually 6000.

I converted to bitcoin right away. So now I have like 1K(USD) in Bitcoin. I was thinking of making wallets for my sister and her kids and plopping about 100 in each so they would have some. There isn’t really anything they could do with them. But they might have fun watching it go up and down.

Shit gift or cool?

My sister has mentioned Bitcoin before so she knows the concept.

Yes. You might as well gift them beanie babies or pet rocks. Those were valuable once, too.

That would be an interesting, kinda cool, Christmas present.

If it seems in keeping with your families gift tradition, then go for it.

If your family also gives each other something somewhat meaningful, you might want to give them something tangible too.

My opinion is that Bitcoin (and its brothers) are a big scam. I wouldn’t put a cent into it, because ultimately it will be worthless.

That said, if you don’t take it seriously, it’s fine. I spent $30 on dinner last week. I could see spending $30 on Bitcoin, with no expectations of anything other than it’s a curiosity.

If the kids want to buy hacked Spectrum TV access or heroin on the deep web, it’s a great gift.

That said, I’m still kicking myself for not getting into it when I was in high school.

It would be a great gift and truly unique.

I wouldn’t put money in now, it’s probably near a peak, but since you have the Bitcoin already, I think it would set up a fun family game, deciding when to sell or keep it.

I would like to receive a bitcoin gift. I would enjoy the novelty and mystery of it. But I admit that I would likely exchange it for regular cash ASAP.

Bitcoin is up to $16,000, which seems ridiculous. I wish I’d bought in a year ago but I feel it is now too late and the bubble is about to burst.

I really hate the concept of Bitcoin. But mostly for environmental reasons. It is a tone of wasted electricity.

My sister did express interest in it so my thought didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. I thought it would be a fun gift since they could check it every few days and see how it is doing (like a share of $AAPL). And they are reasonably well off. It is not like they depend on C-Mas for clothes.

Turns out newegg takes Bitcoin. I’m just going to buy the parts for a new computer and clean up my current one and give it to my sister for C-mas. It is still a pretty solid computer. My sister is currently stuck with a Surface and the twins have really shitty laptops. She said the wanted a real desktop so I think this works for everyone.

Place your order now, it’s sinking.

Options trading starts tonight on Bitcoin. That might settle the market a bit, which is good in the long run, but it will pop the bubble.

Already done…

So new computers for everyone for Christmas.

Why not go for a Ryzen7 system instead?
Speaking of which, I need a new one, too. My old one just fried itself yesterday.

I run OS X. I have a limited amount of parts that work with OS X. Hackitoshes and AMD do not go well together.
