Does One Butter the French Bread on a French Dip Sandwich?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) December 26th, 2017

I got a bottle of Johnny’s French Dip Au Jus for Christmas (Totally yummy regional fav from a restaurant in Washington state).

I want to make French Dip sandwiches tonight for dinner, but am wondering about buttering the bread.

I would never butter bread that was going in gravy. The idea grosses me out.

It would be kind of hard for the au jus to soak in properly if the bread is buttered.

@janbb and @BellaB That’s what I was afraid of. That it would not absorb as much. No butter.

If keeping Kosher is of interest to you, the butter & meat combination is a definite no-no.

How piquant, a French gravy sandwich, such debonair insouciance, brown or black bread?

It was so good. The roast beef was left over from the rib roast we had for Christmas dinner.

@marinelife My son and I went out for dinner last night, your question inspired me to order a French Dip on fresh sourdough hard roll. It was delicious.

Based on this question, I had a modified version – using turkey stock – tonight Really delicious.
