Can any hen lay brown eggs?

Asked by stanleybmanly (24153points) January 1st, 2018 from iPhone

I told a 7 year old that it required “special” training and I’m feeling guilty about it. Wanna help me (and her) out? I think there’s a very special age for kids when the world appears full of wonders. You can see it in their eyes and faces. It’s always a brief but wonderful interlude before the wonder that comes with understsanding is ground to powdery cynicism by dismal reality.

Brown hens lay brown eggs; white hens lay white eggs. And if you are wondering if a hen is white or brown (because it is more beige-yellow), check the ear lobe color.

Not all hens lay brown eggs, but if you really want to wow her, show her the “rainbow” layers. They lay blue and green eggs. Now THAT takes some serious training!

With a little bit of genetic engineering changing egg color is possible. You can tell little kids that some very intelligent individuals have the power recreate nature in their own way, up to a limit, of course, just like magic, except science is even more wonderful.
