Do you support the reauthorization of FISA Section 702 mass surveillance program?

Asked by thisismyusername (2940points) January 12th, 2018

As you know, the house rejected the USA RIGHTS act this week, which allowed the reauthorization of section 702 of FISA (monitoring of all types of communication without a warrant).

Did your representative vote against reforms that would have restricted this warrantless spying? What are your thoughts.

I do not, not in its present form. I believe it is too broad in its scope and to open to abuse. I am not saying we do not need to monitor and maintain our security, just that this is not the way to do it and it needs to be in a more restricted form.

And as to the second part of your question, my congressmen and senators are all Republicans so I don’t even have to go check on how they voted. I known they voted goose-step in line with the way their party heads told them too.

Are you sure? Check the list.

Looks like 58 Republicans voted yes, and 55 Democrats voted no. That means this could have passed if 26 of these Democrats, including Pelosi and Wasserman-Schultz, would have voted yes.

Well I will be hornswaggled! You were correct. Never thought I would see the day that Bill Flores would vote the same way as Nancy Pelosi. We are for sure in the Endtimes now.

Thanks @KNOWITALL!

Just to be clear, there are two links here:

1. this = votes on the amendment (USA RIGHTS act), which would have set some limits to FISA section 702, and would have required warrants.

2. this = votes on the reauthorization of FISA section 702 (warrantless searches and spying).

@thisismyusername I’m in a red state, six of eight voted yes. No surprise there.

I didn’t support FISA when Bush created it as part of the Patriot Act. I liked it even less when Obama approved its renewal with the proviso that it could include spying on Americans on American soil. I still don’t support it. It is an evil piece of legislation that created a whole world of tyranny in this country.

I don’t support it. Honestly, I feel like most of my activities are monitored in some fashion already. So, I guess I won’t be that affected by it…

Because there are people who know far more than I do about it, whose opinion I trust, who are in favor of it.

Remember in the other thread how I said that progressives think I’m conservative and conservatives think I’m progressive? This is one of those times.

^Political affiliation aside, I would say that you’re too trusting… Why would you trust the government, except to pursue their own agenda?...

Rarebear's avatar

I didn’t say that the people I trusted were from the government. I said that reasonable people I trust who understand the issues are in favor of it. And they have given me no reason to distrust them.

That’s funny! Love the Onion
No, I read two articles. One was from CATO and the other from the ACLU.
