Would Puerto Rico have electricity if it were the 51st state?

Asked by thisismyusername (2940points) January 21st, 2018

Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on September 20th, 2017. Four months later, nearly 40% are still without power.

Would these citizens of the US still be without power if Puerto Rico was a state?

Yes, because the GOP Administration would want their congressional votes.

Or, maybe if it wasn’t predominantly Latino.

Probably, States would be run like well…States where power production is regulated. Puerto Rico would probably have power now if the the company contracted to restore it was not a scam. Just before the holidays people who work in utilities were asked to volunteer to to help restore power once the scam was found out. Not sure how all that stands now.

Absolutely. Sadly, didn’t the people of Puerto Rico recently vote against becoming a state??

I think it is without power because Trump and the Republicans have decided it’s a “shithole” protectorate.

@zenvelo . Latinos vote republican already. Why would they get anything? Latinos helped put Trump in office. All he does is shit on minorities, but it doesn’t matter… Maybe Trump wouldn’t win Puerto Rico now… If they don’t have power, they don’t have twitter. Why would they be relevant to Trump?

Trump, and the GOP have nothing to gain by doing their jobs, or serving their citizens. They are comfortable riding America into the ground, for their benefit. They have proven over and over again, that they have ZERO concerns about the common American. It’s up to charity organizations, and ordinary people to help the needy…

No. They voted for statehood. But it’s a multi-step process that seems to have stalled after the popular vote.

@MrGrimm888 Puerto Rico does not have a vote in the Senate or the House. If they had two Senators to vote on the GOP administration’s agenda, the lights would have been on before Halloween.

And I don’t know where you get your facts, but the Latino vote went 2 to 1 in favor of Clinton in 2016.

@Darth_Algar: Thanks for that. So, what is the next step(s) then? Who has to pick up the ball next?

Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria was cold and unsympathetic at the time. Now I think he has forgotten all about it.

@zenvelo . Trump won Florida in large part due to Latino voters. That’s kind of a big deal…

I could be mistaken, but I believe the legislature of Puerto Rico would have to pass a bill to bid for statehood. If that’s done then the US Congress would have to then vote on whether to accept Puerto Rico into the Union or not.

At least if I understand correctly. My grasp of the situation, admittedly, isn’t necessarily the firmest. Anyone who understands it better feel free to elaborate or correct me.
