What do you think will be the punishment for Harvey Weinstein?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) January 28th, 2018

Looking at the judgement for Larry Nassar do you think similar sentence is possible in this case also?

Nope. Weinstein is one of the Hollywood insiders. Nassar wasn’t. You don’t really believe that one of the liberal elites will see any jail time, do you?

^Even if all the charges against him are proved to be true? I know he’s very powerful but that shouldn’t mean he’s not punishable / above the law. In fact he should be punished to the maximum extent possible which should prove to be deterrent to those mighty people who think they can do anything and get away with it because of money and power.

I think he will serve jail time. I’m not sure where or for how long. There is too much of an outcry against him; especially by “liberal Hollywood elites.”

To be judged by his peers for the rest of his life in the court of social acceptance. Any “hard time” will have to be decided upon based on if he touched anyone, how did he touch them, and how old they were, before sentencing him to the Nasser gallows.
This is just the thing I can’t accept: That ALL sinners in cases like these, be they extremely minor injustices or extremely major, be sentenced equally. Surely many wonder where the line will be drawn.

I think he will go to jail for a long time as he deserves but not as long as Nassar. For me, Nassar’s crimes are worse as they involve children.

ragingloli's avatar

Probably the same punishment that Donald Drumpf got.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Probably a cushy rehab for sex addicts, magically healing him in two weeks.

He is up against some pretty serious charges in New York State. The big difference between him and Nassar is that Weinstein wasn’t preying on children, and he was not doing it under the guise of “medical examination”.

Unfortunately, these types of rape cases are more difficult to get a conviction. For example, Bill Cosby is not in jail.

chyna's avatar

^Exactly. And he used drugs to rape them.

Also about that “Liberal elite” bullshit:
Weinstein’s career is over.
Kevin Spacey’s career is over.
Bill Cosby’s career is history.
Liberals are not questioning their guilt.

Whereas:
Donald Drumpf was appointed president.
Roy Moore was allowed to run for office and still got almost half of the votes.
Conservatives deny their guilt vehemently.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Ragingloli Who is denying it? The Reps here are overlooking it for the greater good lol

Loli is right. Shame on you @seawulf575 . As usual you bring up liberalism, for NO reason. Tell me, what do you think Weinstien thought about Trump’s tax bill?

You throw a LOT of stones, for someone living in a glass house…

@imrainmaker What should be and what is are two different things. He should be punished…that is entirely correct. I’m all for throwing the book at him. But let’s be honest…it doesn’t happen in today’s society.

seawulf575's avatar

@ragingloli and @MrGrimm888 I guess the challenge is on. Let’s go back to look at the last time any of the liberal elites were brought to trial in the past 30 years. I can come up with tons of examples of people that should have been brought to trial and haven’t been with the only apparent reason being that they are connected. And please don’t get me wrong, I feel the same way about any of the conservatives that are guilty of anything more than accusations. But let’s be honest here…who does the media protect…liberals or conservatives? And please don’t be fools and try to say they are equal.
As for Weinstein, Spacey, and Cosby’s careers being over, that is not the same thing as being actually punished for sex crimes, is it? And while Bill Cosby is getting too old to do anything, I wouldn’t even buy into Weinstein and Spacey’s careers being over…just on hold for a while.
And @ragingloli you make my point perfectly. You bring up Trump and Moore. I will challenge you…what is the proof against them on any crimes? You have accusations…that’s it. Liberals don’t really need proof I guess. But by your own reasoning, wouldn’t you say Roy Moore’s career is over? Nice hypocrisy. I’m not defending them other than to say there is no crime that there is even proof of. If proof comes forward and they are found to be guilty of crimes then I am all for burning them.
And @MrGrimm888 I just have to ask…what does Trump’s tax reform bill have to do with anything? I would say that most reasoning people like the bill so it is likely that Weinstein found good things in it as well. By your apparent reasoning, if you don’t absolutely hate the tax bill because it is associated with Trump then you aren’t a true liberal. Is that what you are trying to get to? Because if it is, you are more foolish than I thought.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Nope. No challenge. Nothing to debate. YOU inserted politics into the thread. Go argue with yourself….

He should have unwanted sexual advances towards him until he understands what it feels like and is truly sorry.

^Everyone has fantasies of these guys getting raped in prison. The reality is, if they’re put in general population, they’ll likely be murdered instead. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but it isn’t like they get “paid back,” for what they did.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Weinstein has money, so he’ll pay a big fine. Also Weinstein went after grown women, so there will be far less punishment than if he had gone after 14-year old girls.

Nassar is in greater trouble, because he went after 10–16 year olds. That’s a major no-no. Nassar is going to die in prison.

I think his inner soul parts will continue to writhe and suffer, but without nearly as much comfort for his ego, which will also write and suffer, and he’ll develop health conditions and hopefully through legal consequences end up impoverished and imprisoned, probably suffer in our barbaric prison system, then die and suffer in the afterlife, and have unpleasant future lives as well as his soul parts grovel their way along his sewer-like karmic path.
