Are unused U.S. stamps from the past worth anything more than face value these days? (Please see details.)

Asked by 2davidc8 (10189points) March 4th, 2018

I don’t mean stamps from way back in the past like the 1930’s or 40’s. But I do mean unused stamps from, say, the late 1970’s or 80’s, before the arrival of self-stick style stamps, the kind that you had to lick before putting them on the envelope. The stamps are unused, un-canceled.

Unless there’s some particular philatelic value to the stamp based on rarity or error, then the general answer will be “no”.

They can still be used to mail mail. Just as long as they add up to the current postage rate.

Most stamps are not valuable. Finding the rarities is a part of the hobby of stamp collecting.

You have catalog your stamps and look up the value one-by-one to find the answer to the question.

Try using them..or donate them if you wish!

Mint stamps from the 1980s sell at about 6 times face value; that means a stamp company would buy them from you at about twice face value if they are in mint condition.

Find a local stamp dealer, and ask him for an estimate.
