Do you think mobile apps ask for too many permissions than required?

Do you think that is a risk? If so what can we do other than not installing the app?

Yes, I believe it is a risk. I have come across apps that were really ridiculous like that. A stupid game that wants permission to access my contacts, control my phone, control my camera, etc. Why? Before I download any apps, I look at the permissions. If there are a bunch that don’t seem necessary, I don’t download them. I know of nothing that can be done other than not downloading them. I had some that I downloaded and tried turning off select permissions from the app. On the couple I had that control, it just turned them back on itself.

Yes, Yes YES!!! For example there is no reason a flashlight app needs access to your contacts, files and location information.

People don’t read the permission requests and give up too much information to total strangers for virtually no reason. Read and write to my data storage?! are you kidding me? Why is that needed for this app.
I prefer to keep my phone simple. I’ve already given up some to FB there is no reason to give it all out everywhere.

Absolutely. No reason why games need access to your location and photos.

What bothers me more is that people don’t bother to read the permission even when the app asks them straight if they agree to conform. They see the notification and are like “oh, just another popup screen. Let’s click on whatever button it has to make it disappear”. And then shit happens and they are like “how the hell did it happen? Did someone use magic?” Come on! It only takes you 3 seconds to read the permission and click on “no”.

I was around a bunch of friends and at one point they thought I lived under a rock because I didn’t know about that trendy photo app. I asked them to show me the app. They showed it to me on the app store. I was about to try it out when it asked for my location, contacts and a bunch of sensitive stuff. I clicked no on all of them because I could see no point in giving my information just to take a photo. Then the app just kicked me out. Every normal app can function even when I refuse to do the same. At this point I basically said “Fuck you. I rather live under a rock.”
