Do you have a varied taste in music?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) March 27th, 2018 from iPhone

I practically enjoy bands/singers from every genre of music – rock, pop, jazz, blues, hip-hop, R&B, folk, country, bluegrass, metal, grunge, avant-garde, classical, electronic, dance, new wave, ambient, world, reggae, foreign language, etc. But the only thing I really dislike is drone music such as this:

Wierd al and headbangers and classical.

I listen to classical mainly, both instrumental and vocal. But I still like some of the folk and blues singers and groups of the sixties. I like Gilbert & Sullivan, which is not quite classical. And there are some show tunes and movie scores that stay with me.

I grew up with a lot of church music, not just hymns from the hymnals but sacred music out of centuries of tradition. Even though I no longer participate in religious worship, I still have a deep regard for the music.

I have preferences but I will listen to most music. I do draw the line at screamo/death metal and country pop. I can’t stand either of those genres.

ragingloli's avatar

Yes.
Though there are genres that either mean nothing to me, or actively hate, like opera, jazz, or rap.

rockfan's avatar

Why do you actively hate jazz?

ragingloli's avatar

It sounds like semi-random cacophonous noise to me.
It is the musical equivalent of randomly scribbling lines on a piece of paper and then trying to extract shapes from the chaos, versus the painting the sistine chapel.

You know there’s more than one style of jazz right? Have you tried to listen to Dave Brubeck or Stan Getz?

rockfan's avatar

Also, I would compare jazz to expressive figure drawing.

I guess it just has to do with personal taste. I take it that you also dislike Impressionism and abstract art?

Jeruba's avatar

Surely no one is going to try to persuade someone else that their taste in music requires correction?

My feeling about jazz is somewhat similar to ragingloli’s. I dislike the random sound, even though I know it isn’t actually random. I can appreciate the musicians’ artistry on an abstract level and still not enjoy listening to it. I find it grossly irritating, in fact: my visceral response is “Let me out of here.” And yes, I have sat down with a jazz lover and listened to her recordings of great jazz musicians and tried to like them. That’s how I gained a small amount of appreciation while learning that I didn’t care to hear any more of it.

Unlike @ragingloli, I happen to love opera, but I don’t try to make converts. Insisting that anyone else give it a try, as if to say “If only you’d listen to what I like, you’d change your mind,” is pretty condescending toward others’ preferences.

rockfan's avatar

Not what I was doing at all. Ragingloli mentioned that he dislikes jazz because of the randomness of it, and I just mentioned that there are styles of jazz that aren’t random notes, so I merely suggested a few jazz artists.

Louis Jordan is also a good example of jazz that isn’t improvisational

Yes, very diverse.

@Jeruba If someone said “I don’t like opera because I hate when people sing in German,” wouldn’t it be worth pointing out that not all opera is sung in German? Because that’s what’s going on when someone points out that not all jazz is of the modern or highly improvisational type. It’s not about persuading someone else that their taste in music requires correction. It’s about letting someone know that they are judging a whole category by a small subsection of it. From there, it’s up to them whether or not they want to expand their sample size and revisit their judgment.

Yes; blues, folk, acoustic guitar, classic rock, Cajun and Zydeco, klezmer, classical, salsa, some jazz (such as Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis)

I don’t like opera, country and western or 90% of classical music. Almost all musical instruments sound good to me if the music is right, even the bagpipes. I like music that flows naturally although I appreciate discord too and I like some, but not all jazz.

My favorites are:

- High energy dance music, like what you hear at a fashion show, or many gay clubs, groups like Sash, Bronski Beat, Pet Shop Boys, Darude. A lot of it is European, but I also like a lot of the Asian dance music too. Plus, anything Top 40 that comes close to that like some of Lady Gaga’s music, a little bit of Madonna’s music (not her original stuff, I never understood the fascination with Like a Virgin).

- Classical. Mostly, I listen to classical live, we have a very nice symphony here. Some opera too. Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, and some others. At Universal in FL at the Portofino hotel you can be transported to Italy at sundown by going to the piazza and listening to tenors sing some songs. It’s very nice, we go a few times a year. Some of the same tenors sing with our symphony here on occasion.

- I like a lot of 70’s disco and also groups like ABBA. I even pull out Partridge Family sometimes. My husband loves the BeeGees so it isn’t unusual to hear that in our house too.

- 50’s and 60’s music to sing along with, especially riding in the car, or when my parents visit.

- Some classic rock, but I’m sort of picky. I was never a big Rolling Stones fan, but I like Bad Company, Robert Plant, Queen, Pat Benatar, there are more.

- As far as Blues, mostly just Elvis. Have you ever been to Graceland? Even if you love Elvis now, once you go to Graceland it’s like every time you hear a song of his it’s that much warmer, smoother, he was fantastic.

- I like many show tunes. Evita, I actually prefer the movie score that starred Madonna; I sing along while I clean the house. Oh, and talking about movies, I think the song Maria from West Side Story is fantastic. There are many musicals I enjoy, but I only listen to a few of them at home.

- Spanish crossover like a lot of Ricky Martin, Shakira, Gloria Estefan, JLo, Mark Anthony, etc.

- I don’t like jazz, and there is only a few hip hop and rap songs that I like. I’m not a big country music fan, but a few songs I really enjoy, songs like Country Girl, Jolene, and quite a bit of John Denver.

I have been told I have very eclectic taste in music but I just like variety. Sometimes a cantata is called for, sometimes Tuareg and sometimes you just need to bang your head.

Kinds that I have listened to but have not developed a taste for are Big Band, Smooth Jazz, Scat and Rap.

There are examples of pretty much any genre that I dig, but 90% of all music is still shite.

Hi. I’m new here!
I listen to a little bit of just about everything.
My favorite has to be hard rock and metal, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t listen to the Backstreet Boys and P!nk. I also enjoy country from time to time. Some days it’s all about the 80’s. It just depends on my mood, really.
