Why has the US never proposed or pushed for sanctions against Israel for their refusal to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty?

Asked by rojo (24179points) May 9th, 2018

Or for that matter, India, Pakistan and South Sudan?

How is it in Israel’s interest to do so?

Especially with Iran (a signer) ignoring the treaty completely. In what way would signing the treaty work to Israel’s benefit?

@elbanditoroso the question is not really about Israel but the US. If the intent was to get a treaty that outlined the duties and responsibilities of the different countries of the world, with a different set of rules for those that have nuclear weapons and those that don’t, to at least give lip service to abiding by why does the US not pressure Israel (or India, or Pakistan, or South Sudan) the way they pressure other countries to sign treaties that we can evidently ignore at will these days as well and modify behavior by imposing sactions?

Since the day I was born we’ve never challenged anything Israel has done or not done. I’m thinking that maybe it’s because they have never directly threatened us & to my knowledge, they never had nuclear weapons. They kept their wars within their borders. If you notice, the UN tends to leave them alone also. I was raised that if you’ll leave me alone, I’ll leave you alone & Israel has never messed with me or should I say us!!!

I don’t think Israel will give nuclear weapons / technology if any to a country which US considers as a threat. That may be the reason why it is not pushing Israel or India for that matter. I’m not sure about Pakistan or South Sudan. I feel Pakistan is a dangerous place to have such weapons where there is always danger that it can be taken over by terrorist groups.

Because it would be antisemitic.

@LadyMarissa A very common attitude, at least here in the US. A couple of things that might interest you:

As to the nuclear arsenal, while Israel will neither confirm or deny the existence of nuclear weapons on Israeli soil, the general consensus it that they have around a hundred of them.

Nuclear Threat Initiative report

Syria and Lebanon might want to disagree with you over your statement about them keeping the fighting to within their own borders. I think they still possess some Syrian territory.

And, Israel just wishes the UN would leave them alone. Their actions have been condemned so many times and the have been considered in violation of so many resolutions that it isn’t even funny. The only thing Israel has going for it is its Big Brother (how appropriate these days) ‘Murica have the ability to veto anything and everything that comes along that even mentions Israel. That and if the UN were to take the territory back that they gave to Israel it would be tantamount to admitting they (the UN) screwed up in the first place.

I have a hard time imagining the US taking sanctions against Israel about anything. Has the US ever done that?

LadyMarissa's avatar

@JLeslie It might have happened somewhere along the way; but I don’t remember it happening in my lifetime

My understanding is that Israel is reputed to have a small nuclear arsenal. It’s one of the reasons Iran was developing the weapons to begin with. I suppose they’ll build a bomb now, with the likelihood of the nuke deal falling through without the US.
Gee. I wonder whom Iran might target, with a nuclear strike?....
