What app do you use for GPS?

Asked by canidmajor (21233points) May 26th, 2018

I have been informed by my offspring that Waze is getting squirrelly. (I’m old, I still use paper maps) I said I’d ask here for alternative GPS app suggestions. In the USA.

Thanks.

Google Maps. (Not the Waze overlay of Google Maps)

I’m still using Waze. Haven’t noticed anything weird.

I use VZ Navigator, a subscription-based maps and navigation service (90% of the time). But also use Google Maps.
I travel by car several times a year with people that use Waze, there were issues in March 2018 but I think that was fixed.

Google maps on my Android phone.

Also, not really useful to me but really interesting, GPS Test .

You can see how many satellite signals are reaching your phone, with a sky map.

Thanks folks! I’ll look into these.

@seawulf575, you’re suggesting Waze as an alternative to Waze? Gee, helpful.

@canidmajor No, I’m just commenting that I haven’t seen anything weird or squirrelly with it, as described by the question.

I use Maps on my iPhone, but some things about it could be better.

I used to use Mapquest in my computer and you could change the route more specifically to how you planned on going, and I liked that. It’s a good supplement on a long trip if mapquest still does it.

Actually, on longer trips I recommend having a papermap in addition to GPS.

I tried waze a couple of years ago for three weeks and deleted it.

I’m a regular Waze user. I have really good luck getting around traffic with it.

I vote Google Maps. I suppose, it could vary on what you use it for most. For instance, I use the Uber GPS, instead of Google Maps, if I’m driving for them. It’s slightly better, but still flawed. I have a good idea where I am usually though.

I would add that Google Earth, is extremely helpful. I scope out any places that I’m about to go fishing. If I haven’t been, it’s a great help. Reconnaissance…

Google Map would be my first choice as it shows all the possible routes and traffic and so on.
