What are the con sides of leaf blowers?

Asked by flo (13313points) June 13th, 2018

This is about leaf blowers being used on driveways, sidewalks, part of the street to move the leaves into the middle of the street , only for cars passing by to return the leaves almost back to where they were. (The noise is one nuisance, what else?

You have to buy gas for it.

They pollute the air with fumes.

They blow pollens and dust into the air that gets blown into nearby houses.

They are a huge source of noise pollution, and are a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

Yes, and the dirt all over the air! Everyone around is breathing in the dirt. If windows are open it’s in the houses/cars etc, ... The funny/“funny” part is the leaves being blown back to the sidewalk by the passing cars.

@zenvelo It may be a good idea to add EDITED whenever you edit. You’ll get more GAs that way. Thanks for the laugh.

When the gardeners come to my neighbor’s house, they always blow all the debris in the direction of my yard. It often seems to happen right when I’m sitting out there reading too, so I’ll get debris in my eye, not to mention the fumes and the noise. Can’t stand leaf blowers. I’m of the same opinion as @notnotnotnot. A solution to a problem that doesn’t exist (especially when I see people blowing leaves off of dirt and stirring up all kinds of dust. It’s one thing to blow them off of concrete, but why you want bare mud-creating dirt in your yard is beyond me). If you really can’t stand the leaves, you can rake them. No need for leaf blowers.

There’s actually an interesting device called a leaf vacuum, which sucks up the leaves and grinds them into mulch. While it’s still noisy, it’s usually electric and it doesn’t blow dust and debris everywhere. So that’s also an option. My parents have one at their house.

Thank you all. Is there another item that you can think of that’s distructive like that?

snow blowers

Snow blowers are noisy. Lawn mowers too, but at least grass and dog poop etc. is not spread around.

I have my leaves blown every week. That was actually today. I closed my window while they did their thing. They bag them up and take them to somewhere I never had had to think about.

And live in a place that rains 10 months out of the year. If you don’t get rid of the leaves the drains get plugged and it all goes to shit.

You don’t overly strain your back with a blower, and they’re faster than raking.
And you don’t have to use a gas powered one, you can drag an electrical cord around, too!
I use mine to sweep leaves out of my gravel driveway, onto my lawn for mulching, sucking up with the mower. (My ex-neighbor used to blow his debris out of his driveway into the street, where the cars and wind would blow it down to my house, and he’d shovel his snow out there, too, which is illegal. But I don’t think he was too bright…)
A friend of mine uses his blower on cold mornings to blow the snow out of his driveway. (Onto his lawn, I assume.)

They blow pollen into the air. I hate driving past people blowing. My car fills with pollen. Thanks a lot!

How about something gets into your eyes as @Demosthenes mentioned.

I’ve seen partailly handicapped, elderly doing it with rakes even though they know they have access to the blowers.
