Can you think of any other words that have changed their meaning over time?

“Mentally retarded” simply means intellectually delayed, but now the word is synonymous with “stupid”. Are there any more words like this?

“Gay” used to mean joyful.

“Pretty” used to mean cunning.

“Cancer” used to just mean a disease that involves cells multiplying uncontrollably. Now it also means horrendous or abominable

“Presidential” used to mean (from Cambridge Dictionary):
suitable for a president or as is expected of a president, for example by being serious, calm, and deserving of respect:

To many people the candidate just did not look very presidential.
We expect more presidential behaviour from our leader.

A few generations before me, “licked” meant you beat somebody up. Now, if you say “I licked that guy,” it has a whole knew meaning… And yet it was a very masculine term…

Love used to have a totally different meaning than it has now. Now it is misused and thrown here and there every now and then by potential stalkers and perverts. Also, the definition of the word “prosperity” has changed due to the bad lifestyle as today being healthy is also equal to being prosperous, which many people arent.

“Racist” used to mean you were an actual racist. Sometimes it still means that but often it means “I don’t agree with you but I don’t know how to counter what you are saying”

“Gender” used to mean biologically male or female. Still does depending on who you ask.
