I think the USA are about to lose some jobs.
And the European motor cycle enthusiasts are going to pay the same price for their new Harley as before the tariffs.

Somewhere around 32% of their sales last year were exports to Europe, worldwide it is a 40 % last year. Ouch Milwaukee !

I wonder if those bikes will have the same allure once they are made overseas?

stanleybmanly's avatar

Everything on them from
the steel to the rubber in the tires is all imported anyway. I wonder where the paint is made? They probably mix the colors here anyway. Oh well.

And crapple products have engineering defects and are built by underpaid chinese slaves. Does not detract from their image as “luxury”.
In fact, them being made outside of the colonies may even be good for sales, in the face of growing justified anti-colonialism.

Harley Davidson makes motorcycles? They seem to be more of an apparel company.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

They make shitty, underperforming, overpriced retro looking motorcyles using far outdated technology…. If you ask me. But yeah mostly clothing.

Just another way Trump is making America great again. My thoughts on Harley Davidson is irrelevant to the fact that this is a big deal, and probably just the beginning of large companies that will flee the country. A disturbing economic trend.

Trump would be wise to walk back this trade war crap, like he did with other stupid ideas.

Harley Davidson was a huge Trump supporter.
Of course, you can’t count on them supporting his opponent in 2020. It seems Trump fans are unaware of any bad thing he does.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Trump supporters refuse to see anything he does as wrong or stupid.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Not all of them are as stupid as they act. More of them than you think see it plainly but will never admit it. Then there’s the defective pile that see it but don’t care. But you’re right. Those who truly can’t understand that what he’s doing is counterproductive and ill considered, probably suffer the same cognitive deficits as their dear leader.

Now he’s threatening HD with “taxes like you wouldn’t believe!” if they move production over seas. HE IS SO FUCKING STUPID!!!!

Tropical_Willie's avatar

I bet he doesn’t understand the H-D union members will vote Democrat this fall ! SMH

Dutchess_III's avatar

Will there even be a union this fall?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Yes, but if 30% of the Harley-Davidsons are made in Europe, they’re going have fewer members. And levying a TAX ONLY on H-D products is not going to make they change their minds SMH
Maybe he will have public beatings next.
He’s a bully and an egomaniac.

Trump now claims that Harley Davidson grabbed at the tariffs as a handy excuse to offshore production as they’d been planning to do for some time. So you see he is (as always) innocent of any decision reached by HD. Puffed up ignorant bag of useless wind.

Dutchess_III's avatar

He is a bully for sure.

“Trump now claims that Harley Davidson grabbed at the tariffs as a handy excuse to offshore production as they’d been planning to do for some time”

This I think is probably true.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Regardless of HD’s plans, Trump’s actions have unquestionably had a negative effect on the company. Now he’s threatening to tax them too.

I find it interesting that so many conservatives supported Trump, because he was supposed to decrease the power of the government to have a say in what private companies do. Now he has pressured the NFL to change their policy. And is pressuring HD to do what he wants. Sounds like the exact opposite of what conservatives wanted…

Many, many companies are going to start to have to make decisions about where they buy ingredients/parts for their products and where they manufactur them as a direct result of the tariffs.
Worse. There could be no real end to the title for tat tariffs. Such uncertainty, should make running almost every business more difficult. This seems like an economic quagmire…

Dutchess_III's avatar

What is going to happen to this country?

ragingloli's avatar

Idiocracy.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

The good USA companies like H-D will be financially abused until they go bankrupt.

Happy Orange Hair ! He’s had a lot of practice going bankrupt.
