Justice Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court. Should Trump be allowed to nominate another judge, since this is probably his last year in office?

Holding with precedent.
And how will this affect the court?

Yes, Trump will nominate another judge.

Kennedy’s decision to step down could transform the Supreme Court for generations. Trump will have his second opportunity to nominate a justice and will likely replace Kennedy with a young, conservative jurist. That would create a bloc of five staunch conservative justices who could move the court further to the right and cement a conservative majority for the foreseeable future.

As if that court was not leaning fascist enough already.

It’s inevitable that Trump will name a replacement and it’s almost as inevitable it will be someone with solid conservative views. If Hillary had won we’d be looking at a Supreme Court with a liberal majority as it is the pendulum is swinging in the other direction. Elections have consequences.

His last year isn’t until next year, isn’t it?

Nobody can stop him from nominating.

If the Republicans ram through the approval before January, buh-bye civil rights, consumer protections, environmental protections, due process.

Roberts and his four friends virtually always side with the powerful against the weak and the wealthy against the poor. They would love to pad their 5–4 majority into 6–3.

@Dutchess_III: July 31. ”Kennedy’s long-rumored decision to step down July 31 will touch off a titanic battle between conservatives and liberals in the nation’s capital, on the airwaves, and in states represented by key senators whose votes will be needed to confirm his successor.” from this: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/06/27/justice-kennedy-retiring-opening-supreme-court-seat/952716001/

Watch Trump win re-election.

Trump will indeed nominate a justice. The Republicans will have to rush to get a confirmation before the midterm elections.

I’m feeling sick. We have gone nowhere but backward since the election.

Yep It’s a hard rain that’s gonna fall.

President Trump isn’t up for re-election until 2020. Of course he will nominate another Justice. And if Ginsburg finally retires, he will nominate a third.

@seawulf575 And then the world will end and Alice will jump down the rabbit hole? lol

I mean you can’t blame the liberals for being freaked out, to them it’s like a perfect storm. No wonder they’re raging against the machine.

seawulf575's avatar

This is why they have fought so hard to come up with something, anything, to use against President Trump as grounds for impeachment. It was always known that whoever won the last presidential election would likely get to nominate several SCOTUS justices.

Well. The GOP stole the last seat. In a fair world, this would be a democratic pick.

Hopefully conservatives are careful with the direction they keep forcing our country. Before I leave it for good. I plan to burn it to the ground. Careful what you wish for….

In this thread: conservatives desperately trying not to get the joke.

Pence wouldn’t pick anyone less conservative.

I’m grabbing my ankles. I’ll try to enjoy what happens next, to what used to be America…

Pence, with those judges? Uugh…... There’s potential for civil war…

Let’s see what happens to the Senate in November.

Sure he will and I imagine pretty soon. Why wouldn’t he, by the way?

Be allowed? Can’t think of how anyone has any power to stop him and MaConnell?

I’m still pissed Obama didn’t get to fill the Supreme Court spot that opened up near the end of his term.

I’m sure all the republicans who didn’t like Trump, who don’t like him even more after having him in office, who had voted for him holding their nose, now feel a little bit of comfort that Trump will be putting in a new Justice.

Of course Trump is going to put someone in to replace Kennedy.

My guess is some of the very religious people who see Trump as being on the prophesy, see this as another sign.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It was not his choice. I’m pretty sure the Republicans blocked him @JLeslie.

^^I know.

It gives me comfort to think of Michelle and Barack in the wings, seeing all the same things we’re seeing, but you know they’re taking some sort of action.

They’re safe economically. YOU and yours should be so lucky.
