Emperor Shah jahan died on 22nd January 1666 in a prison. Prior to his death, he was imprisoned for eight years by his son Aurangzeb. Shah Jahan’s health started deteriorating after slow poisoning of his food by I’tibar Khan upon Aurangzeb’s instructions. Shah Jahan possibly died due to the effect of the poison and ill health.

Although the exact cause of his death remains unknown, it is, as the previous answer states, true that Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son. Did you know that his prison overlooked the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders? The Taj was built during Shah Jahan’s rule. The view afforded by his prison cell must have been some consolation.
