Did Roger Ebert ever change his opinion on John Carpenter's "The Thing"?

Asked by ragingloli (51957points) July 13th, 2018

When it came it, it was savaged by critics, Ebert included.
Now it is, rightly so, considered one of the best horror movies ever made.
Did Ebert ever admit his error?

It looks like he never revised his original review. He didn’t exactly hate it.

It’s his opinion. There is no error to admit. Besides, he was old enough to remember the original movie. It will always be the REAL “Thing” for me too.

Here’s his review of the 2011 version with a discussion and evaluation of previous versions::

With ET and Star Wars capturing the spotlight it’s easy to see how this gem got overshadowed. It was the 80’s and that film was ahead of its time. The silver screen version was a gem too.
