The best movie you've seen so far this year is?

Asked by ucme (50047points) July 23rd, 2018

Yeah, just that.
Mine?
How delightful of you to ask, A Quiet Place probably sneaks it.

Isle of Dogs.

I’ve not seen many films this year but the best was either Stefan Zweig:Farewell to Europe or The Darkest Hour

@ucme I kept looking at that last weekend to rent on Redbox but people were trashing it. Due to your recommendation, I’ll rent it this weekend. I did see the Commuter with Liam Neilson. I liked it.

In Darkness, probably.

I’ve only seen one.
“Ghost in the Shell.”

Snow piercer was the only film I watched this year that was even remotely decent.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? It’s the Mr. Rogers story.
I was smiling the whole time except for the (several) times when I had tears in my eyes.
Not many movies affect me that way.

I haven’t seen many 2018 films. Just two recently and I enjoyed both.

Sorry to Bother You
The director Boots Riley’s first movie, and it shows, and it was still really good. One of those movies where the crew swings for the fences with a crazy script and it’s a rough, but you see what they were going for and you cheer the whole way.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado
Action film, really scary at times. Not my usual fare, I went in expecting a spy movie. Instead it was a shoot ‘em up. But it has a great story and it’s full of surprises.

2001 A Space Odyssey in its full 70mm glory

@chyna Maybe those trashing it just didn’t handle the long periods of silence where dialogue is kept to a minimum. I mean, it’s a brave move but sets the tone & tension brilliantly.
Hope you enjoy, let me know :)

@ucme @chyna Based on the recommendations above I decided to check out A Quiet Place. I assumed it had something to do quiet places. Mr Roger often had quiet scenes where there was no talking or sounds. “How long is a minute? Let’s set this timer and see.” It added to the mellowness of the show. So I assumed AQP was mellow, too.
Boy! Was I wrong!

As far as horror movies go, I prefer this.

@luckyguy. So did you like it or not?!?

LuckyGuy's avatar

@chyna I didn’t watch it yet. I only looked it up to see if it was something that would interest me.

I saw A Quiet Place at the cinema with my daughter & boy can you hear every rustle of snack packages & clearing of throats. If anyone had farted they woulda been kicked out.
Was a little uncomfortable at first but you soon get used to the silence & whispering it really is a great film though enjoyed it thoroughly, we both did.

@ucme I watched A Quiet Place this weekend. I really liked it. It’s a great scary movie, but probably not for everyone.
