Have you ever compared Greek mythology with the Christian stories?

I think I posted a similar question a couple of years ago…

I shared the myth of Medusa, how she was raped and then she was punished for it. Sigh. Then a Christian came on and said, ”.... (the gods) Sat up on Mt.Olympus and picked on locals…. They started all kinds of bad stuff…..... Breeding with the primitive human race” He was making fun of their beliefs.

I said “Well, God did that all of that too! I mean, who is Jesus’ father? And what did he do to Job if not to pick on him? And what happened if people looked back toward Sodom and Gomorrah? Same thing that would happen if you looked at Medusa.
The parallels between Christianity and the Greek Myths have always fascinated me.”

What other parallels can you think of? Also, did the Greeks believe their myths as strongly as the Christians believe their Bible stories?

They are not myths.
Ever seen lightning? Proof that Zeus is real.

Loads of parallels. The timing of the rise Christianity is very relevant as well. It emerged as the Romans were loosing their grip on their empire, only to emerge with a new Theological empire bigger and richer, The Roman Catholic Church. They took a page out of the very powerful Jewish religion and built on their myth of the coming of a saviour. To convert folks, they piggy backed on the holidays of the old beliefs and viola.

Zeus=God. I don’t know who all his sons were, or if any can be compared to Jesus. He had a boatload of kids outside of his marriage to Hera. Zeus was a ho.

@ScienceChick When the Romans got their hands on the scripture they pretty much rewrote it, the entire religion, to suit themselves. It’s very purpose is to control people, and it does that to this day.

This is a really interesting article. It questions why things that have happened in other religions are recognized as myths, be when the exact same thing happens in Christianity is accepted to be true.

The cultures they were converting were so used to praying to a variety of gods, they created the system of saints to accommodate.

Wow are you confused ?

The evidence points in the opposite direction. Consider the findings of the woman often called the smartest of the 20th Century, Simone Weil. She only picked up what the early Church said about the question you are asking !!!!

Intimations of Christianity Among the Ancient Greeks. In Intimations of Christianity Among the Ancient Greeks , Simone Weil discusses precursors to Christian religious ideas which can be found in ancient Greek mythology, literature and philosophy.

How can a religion that predated Christianity by thousands of years imitate a religion that hadn’t been invented yet? Christianity is only a couple of thousand years old.
