Am I being too tough on the Baby Boomers?

Asked by josie (30934points) July 29th, 2018

I’m sort of wedged between Millenials and young Boomers
I confess I am critical of the Baby Boomers, but it’s nothing personal. I do it as sort of a sociological exercise.

Having said that, a friend said I was being too harsh when I made the following observations:

-They spent The Great Generation’s money and then used credit cards and the US Treasury to keep the party going
-In doing so they have condoned a level of individual and National debt that would have been regarded as immoral by their parents
-They preach conservation but are profligate consumers
-They believe in hippie/60s style personal freedom but judge/regulate those folks who don’t behave in a fashion they regard as proper
-They refuse to grow up and demonstrate this by their tendency to wear clothing that occasionally looks age inappropriate (in my opinion) and their pursuit of cosmetic surgery (which in my opinion never looks very good)

This is mitigated slightly by the music that they produced
Anyway, like I said it’s nothing personal but am I being too harsh?

Not all Baby Boomers were rich as many were poor and struggling etc
There were as present day categories or levels of Society .
It is the upper classes that prospered as they had money to invest and start businesses and control the economy. If one were to separate each level as example: Poor, middle class and upper classes then do the research on what happened to each level you will find less of an rich lifestyle then the described Baby Boomers that documentaries speak of.

I suppose you can blame them/us. I’m actually just a bit
too old to qualify as a boomer, but you should remember that the ground shifted beneath us as existence in the country shifted from optimism and progress to the comparatively dismal prospects defining us today. Though simplistic, I believe a great percentage of our major troubles are about the return of the gilded age defining this country prior to the Great Depression.

Wait…wait…what about Gen X? We “Boomers” blamed our parents for all the stuff, then they named themselves the Greatest Generation, which made us sound like petulant (flower) children. Then Gen X blamed us for stuff. Now the millenials blame us.
@josie, if you are at the tail end of Boomers, you are Gen X, not really near Millennials. Maybe you would consider taking some of this blame that seems to be so necessary?

I hope not because they are the last generation that could take a punch as well as give one.

@canidmajor
FYI you got me too close to the Boomers. But I am not talking blame.
Just sayin

Sure you are. Boomers span birth years of 46–64, and the difference in people born in 46 and 64 are night and day and way of life was night and day too. To try to be so general with that generation is unwise in my opinion. I would say that people born right in the middle do not feel association with either end of the boomer spectrum.

Yes, you are being too harsh. Especially notable is that you tend to put ALL boomers in the same category.
