How do you feel about the United States Space Force?

Asked by Caravanfan (13520points) August 9th, 2018

The Space Force is an idea that has been around for a long time, and the Trump Administration wants to get it off the ground. (Get it?). What do you think?

I think it a waste of time and rhetoric, just another opportunity for our clown of a President to appoint another crony criminal to public office.

ragingloli's avatar

It will mark the beginning of another uncalled for arms race to the militarisation of space.
But if the world is lucky, the colonies will bankrupt themselves trying to set it up, because not only do they have to develop all the vehicles and weapons systems that operate in space, which will take countless billions and decades at least, they also have to build countless launch sites to deliver the vehicles into orbit at a reasonable pace.
Plus all the training and training facilities for all the operatives that they will launch into space.
It is going to be a shitshow.

Yellowdog's avatar

I thought Obama scrapped the space program, saying we need to cooperate with Russia and China. Seems like Russia subsequently told us we’d need a trampoline to get to the International Space Station.

I saw the funeral of the Space Shuttle a few years back. America cheered, thinking this 30-year-old relic from the Reagan era was a symbol of America’s Ingenuity and innovation

Obama had it right. Its time for Russia and China to take up the baton of the space race and associated military operations.

josie's avatar

See above.

Probably ought to let the Russians and Chinese do it. They could use the science and technological discoveries to save mankind.

The US ought to stick to building….whatever it builds anymore, graduate a few more psychology majors, and a few less engineers, and let the math and science go for good.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I think he should get affairs in order down here, before worrying about up there.

janbb's avatar

^^ Agree 100%

elbanditoroso's avatar

It’s a myth until it[‘s funded. I see it as more Trumpian hype.

They could take the money for the (ha ha) Mexico Wall and give it to the Space Cadets.

MrGrimm888's avatar

This was inevitable. The US likes to be militarily superior to all. Plus, other countries are in expansion mode. China claiming the South China Sea, is a great example. It would have been a matter of time before China stuck a flag on Mars, or the Moon, and said “mine.”

The shitty part, is that we will spend untold amounts of money on research and development, just to have China, or North Korea steal the technologies, for pennies by hacking and espionage…

The even shittier thing, is that our race must always reduce every new frontier, to something to fight over…

I will say, that I do believe that we aren’t alone in the universe. It may seem like a waste of resources, but if we get invaded by aliens, Trump will be a savior, for getting the program funding. Maybe we could fend off an invasion, and then ask the world for donations…

Yellowdog's avatar

@MrGrimm888 we are ALREADY getting invaded by aliens.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

YD go to your room ! !

MrGrimm888's avatar

That’s your foolish conservative opinion @Yellowdog .

Obama actually invited them…

Tropical_Willie's avatar

It better to have aliens than getting Skinheads, NeoNazis and other whack jobs that think Make America White Again is the way to running the USA.

Yellowdog's avatar

Obama is PRECISELY why we are being invaded by aliens, Of that we can agree @MrGrimm888

Howbeit, this is supposed to be a GENERAL discussion of the Space Force.

kritiper's avatar

It’s like, FAR OUT, man! But a bit too far out to not be handled by the USAF.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I think its cool. A prelude to the Star Trek’s Federation.

Patty_Melt's avatar

We can reuse the slogan, “It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure.”

ragingloli's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1
More like the Terran Empire from the Mirror Universe.
The prelude to the Federation would be the United Nations Space Force.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@ragingloli Agreed.. thanks for the clarification.

mazingerz88's avatar

I feel only idiots would name this program Space Force.

Yellowdog's avatar

@mazingerz88 Agreed. I think it ought to be named Intersteller Force of 10,000 Worlds

JLeslie's avatar

What’s he doing? Trying to sound like Kennedy?

It actually doesn’t bother me that NASA have military rank. Does an Air Force pilot have to leave the military to be an astronaut? Or, can he/she maintain both simultaneously?

Is NASA really so different than say NOAA that does have military officers?

I guess NASA can be compared to the department of energy or department of education also, which has civil servants, not military.

Space Force sounds corny though.

And, yes, I got it. Lol.

Yellowdog's avatar

I think we should name it something to scare our enemies and make them think we rule the entire universe. If they don’t believe us, a few photon torpaedos or laser blasts from the skies, evaporating a few Holy sites, ought to be convincing

If not the Universe, then something suggesting the Milky way Galaxy (it’s 100,000 Light Years in Diameter). We answer to Azathoth, the Daemon Sultan who sits in the ineffable void and is served by piping flautists and insane percussion beyond time and space.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Did you see the proposed logos for the space force? link

This appears to be for real.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Trump, had Pence and his secretary of defence actually go to the Pentagon to get this idea going.

WOW! just plain WOW, Obama was condemned for bailing out the auto industry and saving thousands of jobs, and spin off jobs.
And How dare he want and affordable care act(NOT FREE) if poor people don’t have over priced health care insurance they can just die if they get sick or hurt.
But a space force now that’s where the future is the u.s must be ready, when the little green men arrive to invade, and who cares how much this will cost, you have to be ready.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

For a stable genius he is sounding less, and less stable with each passing day.

kritiper's avatar

We are space cowboys! Bet you weren’t ready for that!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

What is Trump?? Marshal Dillon?

stanleybmanly's avatar

More like Festus on a power trip.

Brian1946's avatar

Marshall Dildo: he was hung like a mosquito, but still found a tool to screw over everyone except white, Xian, multi-millionaire men.

JLeslie's avatar

I’d be curious to know how many people assumed NASA was part of the military to begin with. I bet it’s a lot. Many of the astronauts are from the military.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s a mega billionaire playing Star Wars Comes To Life. It’s a game to him. It’s ALL a game to him.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I think it’s just getting attention, because Trump is an easy target. Honestly, I wager we’ve had a “space force,” unofficially for decades…

Like I said, it was inevitable. I guarantee that when we colonize Mars, we’ll have a military, vehicles, and weapons customized for that planet.

I know that some people will think I’m crazy, but we really should have a way to defend ourselves from a potential alien threat. I’m thinking a “spaceship/battleship” could maybe help against random meteorites, asteroids, and comets.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that military research and development, has led to amazing technologies. I am certain that we will stumble upon many, when doing the R and D.

Yes. Trump is an abhorrent idiot. Yes. I think it is a game, to him. Yes. He probably has very little grasp on what he’s doing with the Space Force. Yes. There will be wasted money, and developing, building, and training will be VERY expensive, and dangerous.

But….

If we intend to maintain air superiority, which is vital to modern military strategy, we need to control the air, and the “space” above it…

It should also add competition. I am certain that multiple nations will also start development of a space military. Like Loli said, there will be an arms race.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That argument, “defending ourselves against alien forces,” reminds me of the rednecks with their AR15s gonna defend the country ‘gainst the damn government when it turns on us.
If there is an alien force with the technology to travel though time and space, and wind up near Earth, still alive and ready to fight, I kinda don’t think we will be able to do much about it.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Grow up, people. It is real, it is needed, and just because you don’t take President Trump seriously doesn’t mean he doesn’t take the weight of his decisions seriously.

Yellowdog's avatar

@MrGrimm888: Dutches is right—if an alien force was able to travel through time and space and ready to fight—yeah. they’ve already mastered the actual manipulation of time and space, and there is nothing we could do to defend ourselves. It takes years for objects traveling at the speed of light to simply get to the next star—then there are fuel considerations and other matters that make interstellar travel impossible.

But there’s hope. The universe is vastly different and more complicated than what we perceive with our five senses and can ever conceive with our minds. Compare how a human perceives things to how a kitten, or ant perceives things—much more exists than what we can conceive even if we were to have the misfortune of experiencing it. So, even though attack or invasion from outer space as we know it is near impossible (and impossible to defend from)—there are things all around us in this multiverse that we cannot even perceive or begin to understand. Attack or being devoured will probably come from these realms.

Our weapons don’t even work in space—so we’re doomed there anyway.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@Yellowdog . I really liked your thoughtful response.

I disagree with one point.

I think you, and others, are underestimating the human ability to cause damage. I wager, that our collective military technologies, are far more advanced than that of another intelligent, space aged race. Not sure I want to say “thanks” to the US, but because of them/us, we have some pretty scary weapons. And, we are on our home turf. The rednecks, with AR’s, would be more difficult targets, than an unarmed person. I think it would be really hard, for almost any army, to walk the US down to our last. Those crazy gun nuts, could increase your chances of survival…

Remember. The US , defeated Britain. That was almost as bad as an alien invasion. They were a vastly superior opponent. They had thousands of troops stationed here. They had pre-built defenses, fortresses, and a lot going history of warfare, and studying it, and making advancements. America was largely a civilian population, at the time, and overcame amazing odds to send the Brits back over the pond…

We can’t keep our house in order. The human race. But you better eat your Wheaties, if you think you can fuck with all of us…

Dutchess_III's avatar

@MrGrimm888 People with guns are NOT harder targets. Just launch a RPG at them and poof. Or drop bombs with a Blackhawk stealth bomber. Or blow them up from hundreds of miles away.

ragingloli's avatar

Aliens can wipe out all life on the planet with an RKM, and humans have no defence against it.
Hell, they will not even see it coming until the moment of impact.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Dutch. With all due respect, I disagree.

America, like it or not, has an army of civilians, and ex-military, that would make taking our country door to door VERY hard.

On a side note, where can I get me one o them “stealth Blackhawk bombers?’...

Dutchess_III's avatar

What is a RKM, Raggy?

If the government turned on us, it wouldn’t be going door to door. Why even bother?

ragingloli's avatar

Exactly. Just start nuking cities until they surrender.
I hear you have experience with that.

ragingloli's avatar

@Dutchess_III
Relativistic Kinetic Missile.
Any object accelerated to a considerable fraction of the speed of light.
Ridiculously effective, and ridiculously easy to do.
No fancy space magic required.

MrGrimm888's avatar

You don’t nuke your own cities. Look at Syria.
If you want the cities, you have to go door to door.

If someone had the intention of simply destroying the planet, that would be exponentially easier, than taking it. But then, what’s the point? I’m just saying that it would be difficult to kill 7 billion people who are fighting for there homes, and families…

ragingloli's avatar

Why not?
All you have to say is “only liberals live there”, and bam, your targets are no longer human.

ragingloli's avatar

And you do realise that Assad is being accused of gassing his own people?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Which 7 billion people will the government plan on killing, and why? And what is the point of having a city if there is no one to run them?

Caravanfan's avatar

An RKM wiped out the dinosaurs and most of life on Earth. @ragingloli is correct—ridiculously easy to do.

edit. It wasn’t actually “relatavistic” which is at a fraction of the speed of light.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Then why didn’t he just say “big ass meteor??”

Caravanfan's avatar

@ragingloli Is answering right now, but yes. Big Ass Meteor. The difference with a random asteroid and an RKM is that an RKM is aimed, and it’s “relativistic speed”. The asteroid that hit the earth was not at relativistic speeds. But it shows that you actually don’t need relativistic speeds to do the job.

ragingloli's avatar

1. an asteroid impact is a naturally occuring event.
2. it is comparatively slow to an actual, artificial RKM. Half the speed of light at minimum. And as you get closer to c, the kinetic energy increases exponentially.
It would be like this but a LOT worse.

Caravanfan's avatar

@ragingloli Yes, I realized my mistake while you were typing.

Dutchess_III's avatar

BUT with a RKM the gubment would be destroying itself too.

Caravanfan's avatar

@Dutchess_III @ragingloli was talking about space aliens who find us annoying. It’s probably what the Vogons did to create their hyperspace bypass.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oooo. I thought we had switched to talking about the government wanting to declare war on its civilians.

But yeah. Aliens would win, hands down. We wouldn’t even know what hit us.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Dutch, my comments were about alien invasion. Not some internal government thing, or civil war.

Caravanfan's avatar

Ultimately, though, back to the OP, Space Force isn’t about aliens. It’s about a military presence in space for domestic defense. At least as I understand it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

….don’t we already have something like that in place?

ragingloli's avatar

No. It is about having the sword of Damocles hanging above the rest of the world’s heads as an added blackmail device to ensure the colonies’ global haegemony.
“Defence” at this point is nothing more than a propagandistic buzzword.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Oh. It’s definitely to get an advantage.

imrainmaker's avatar

@MrGrimm888

“You won’t be mocking the Space Force, when they save us from Obama’s Islamic fleet, hiding behind the Sun…”

Apparently you’ve been reading Yellowdog’s mind. ;-)

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Actually Donnie Jr, copyrighted the the term “Space Force” but will only charge $1,000,000 a day for the use of the term by the US government. ~ ~ ~ ~ J.K.

Yellowdog's avatar

I think Trump has already stopped the Obama / Islamic Mullahs pipeline to Iran….

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Yellowdog Outer space for sure !

Yellowdog's avatar

@Tropical_Willie In case you haven’t heard, Obama gave 150 Billion in U.S. dollars to Iranian Mullahs (terrorists) to bankroll their nuclear program. Satellite imagery has shown the arsenal they were building. Trump put a stop to it.

It seems odd that ANYONE would support Obama’s deal with Iran, except, of course, Obama’s friendship with Iranian Mullahs cannot be questioned, in a woeful effort at keeping peace (I suspect Obama has other motives with them) and everything Trump does must de exclaimed absolutely horrible.

You will benefit (with your life) for Trump having prevented Iran from having Nukes, but you don’t deserve it.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Its oppressive that its ment for global dominance and not space exploration. At least is a small step towards the future.

Yellowdog's avatar

I don’t see the U.S. as having aspirations of oppression or world dominance. I do see them as intercepting nuclear attacks, EMP attacks, etc

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Yellowdog Trump said the words space Dominance or was it Pence. Either way the news report was creepy. I will look for the link Pence Says Space Force to Assert U.S. ‘Dominance’ in Orbit

Yellowdog's avatar

Well, if it ever gets off the ground (no bad pun intended) which I doubt—someone else will be president by then. But thanks for the info. I stand corrected

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Trump is in outer space.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Yellowdog I hope the future president isn’t someone worse? Is that even possible?

Yellowdog's avatar

@Tropical_Willie So what? I am in Middle Earth
@RedDeerGuy1 Trump was elected as kind of a RE-action against current corruption in Washingon— doubtful the Trump trend will continue just in my opinion

ScienceChick's avatar

I didn’t read all the answers here, but I did see that @Yellowdog wrote that Obama scrapped the space program. How bloody stupid, No he did not. NASA has been going strong and doing plenty and there has always been a plan to bring back the manned launches to the US. https://www.nasa.gov/about/whats_next.html Why and HOW could someone think that NASA was somehow shut down and that This Yellow Cheeto man has ‘restarted’ it? Because he said he did? yeah, right. And I have some nice sea coastal land for sale in Kansas.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Yellowdog You & FOX just never stop. Obama didn’t “give Iran” a single dime. He released $150 billion dollars of Iran’s own assets which he had previously frozen.

ScienceChick's avatar

This is Trump’s SDI and will go the same way. He’s a bigger moron than Reagan ever was.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

HEY,hey If Trump and Fox say it so,there for it most be so.
Doesn’t matter if it can be debunked by anyone with access to the internet.
And there is always look at how well the economy is doing,or wait is that one of Hillary’s emails over there?
And @ScienceChick you can’t bad mouth Reagan after all he was the one to bring in the trickle down economy and that really got the wealth flowing to the top,I mean before that the lower classes wages were raising, and you can’t have that the wealthy will look after the lower class, look at how well they have done since.
Trump wants to be Darth Vader,I mean you have to be ready when those pesky Rebels attack.

Yellowdog's avatar

Everyone prospered in the 1980s. The income of the very poor almost doubled.

Sure, the wealthy GOT more—but only a trifle of a percentage of their total income. If the rich grew fifteen percent richer that may have been a lot. But if someone making $11,000 was now making $21,000 that’s quite an improvement.

kritiper's avatar

@Yellowdog Everyone?? It sure didn’t happen for me or anyone else I knew. And I was out of work twice during the eighties…

SQUEEKY2's avatar

OMG @Yellowdog do you just make those numbers up?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Thanks @ragingloli like I said most of right wing propaganda can be debunked by anyone with access to the internet.
BUT Ssshhhh they don’t like it when you prove them wrong they go email hunting when you do that.
Now we should get back to Lord Trump’s space force fantasy.

Yellowdog's avatar

Actually the data was available online in 1989 in a sociology class I was taking

Many went from $12,000 to #24,000 from 1982 to 1988.

There was a meme that “The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer” that we had to prove or disprove. The data did NOT support that the poor were getting poorer—in fact,ALL economic classes prospered from 1982 to 1988.—only Appalachia and parts of The Rustbelt did not prosper and manufacturing jobs were lost. But it was not that drastic of an effect overall.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Uh huh now those $24000 in 1988 ,went to $24960 in 2018 aint trickle down great?
while those at the top have seen their incomes explode upwards.
But feel free to point out some other rainbows ,or escaped emails.
Sorry getting distracted from Lord Trumps space force fantasy question.

kritiper's avatar

@Yellowdog I lived in Idaho during that time. Did not see an increase in wages (the wages you mentioned) ANYWHERE* around here.
(* the western US)
Minimum wage is $7.25 per hour or $15080 per year.
