How would the markets react if Trump is impeached?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) August 23rd, 2018

As per Trump everyone will be very poor if that happens. Do you agree?

They definitely will react , but if that gets those stupid tariffs dropped ,and other countries rescind their retaliatory tariffs, things will settle back down rather quickly.
Although the Rep/cons will cry the end of the world is coming ,but that is another story.

gorillapaws's avatar

I would guess there would be a drop on the news. The market doesn’t like uncertainty and a national impeachment trial would produce a lot of uncertainty. Eventually it would settle back down.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Agreed. Temporary drop. If it were a different POTUS, I’d have a different opinion. But Trump, is already so unpredictable, and his interests in trade wars, would seemingly calm the market, with sudden stability.

They will go down briefly, not all that sharply, for a couple of days.

Then they will pop right back up because Pence will be seen as a stabilizing factor.

Trump lowered pollution restrictions, which made it easier for companies to make money. He also gave huge tax cuts to the rich. That’s why the stock market went up last year.
This year, the stock market has been flat. It is nearly unchanged sine January. That isn’t what you hear from the president, but it’s true. His tariff war is damaging the economy.
So, at the moment he is impeached/removed/resigning/assasssinated, there may be a small waiver, but market reaction will really reflect which of his policies are ceased first.

You can wish all you want to.

The U.S. markets would crash, and you know it. There would be no confidence in the U.S. economy or industry. The U.S. would be seen as extremely unstable. There would be about a six month crash and a slow reconstruction or recovery but it would be the lowest in four years or more, even after a couple of years of recovery.

China and Russia, largely unfettered, would take up the place of world economic dependency.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Sorry @Yellowdog while I agree they would react, I really disagree they would to the extent you’re saying, they would rebound a lot faster than you think.

Yellowdog's avatar

It doesn’t matter if you agree or what I think. Look what has taken place the past two years. Tough policies have made the U.S. economy recover at the expense of those who have taken advantage of the U.S. for decades, If America doesn’t stay the course, it will crash.

@Yellowdog Your analysis of “what has happened” is out of sequence.

Tax “cuts” from last year have not been in full effect because they apply to tax year 2018. Next spring, when tax increases for the middle class are realized, it will affect the economy and the market.

Tariffs have barely started to affect commerce, the earliest one started kicking in July 1. And interested rates increases because of overheating economy an dspending are just beginning to creep up.

The markets don’t like uncertainty so there would be a dip in the short term while things are being resolved but in the longer term there would be no change.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Oh but the Rep/cons will scream the end of the world is coming!!
Yes short term the markets will be affected, but they will rebound rather quickly.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I think that the market will drop 2,000 in three days, every second day, during impeachment. Also minor gains every second day until the market stabilizes.

Yellowdog's avatar

You are fairly astute and intelligent—lets hope that’s all there is.

But there are other factors that affect the nation and the economy, like rioting and chaos.
We are not really talking about impeachment but a Coup d’etat which we have never experienced in America before. Try THAT for what will happen to the economy.

When America falls, so goes the world—and some place like China takes over the world economy, Russia controls much of Europe, and the hostile forces in NK and the Middle East fire at will with whatever they got. They are well funded.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Yellowdog A Coup d’etat is a failed Coup. Just call it a Coup. Maybe the heartland will seperate from the east and west coasts. Or possibly a constitutional change. USA’s military is too well trained and armed to be bucked against. Which defeats the 2nd amendment.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@Yellowdog . Trumpers would be the only potential people upset, like in the whole world. As they are a minority in America, I welcome them to riot. Most of them, are spread over rural areas. They pose a fraction of the threat from those opposing Trump. If Trump doesn’t go, then we could see riots, and civil unrest on a scale never seen here…

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Yellowdog just because Your Stable Genius said it would drop and make everyone poor (most people don’t have alot of money tied up in the Stock Market !)

By past quote I’d believe just the opposite!
Trump, “Cohen did / didn’t pay-off Stormy”
Trump, “They shouldn’t let Cohen lie about things to get a plea bargain!” (All plea bargains get vetted before there is bargain; there is truth to to what Cohen has said!)

Yellowdog's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Your link shows the maturity level of what is wrong with the country right now. This loud, hysterical, inflamed, very juvenile fraction of the U.S. and world population is attempting a political coup. @MrGrimm888 about 70 million people elected and support Trump and the normative procedure of the way our government is run.

Look at @Tropical_Willie ‘s link, and realize that THIS is the element that wants to overthrow Trump and take over the country. They can do it in sheer numbers and hysterical riots and civil unrest, They are a minority, but a very violent, vocal, visible and in-your-face minority who will stop at nothing to overthrow the government. America plunged into chaos and loss is acceptable as is economic disaster as long as it means the end of Trump.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Your sixth grade President and wannabe “Putin” is in a tailspin over his “there is no collusion”
Civil unrest like in Charlottesville, Virginia brought on by the ultra Right, KKK and Skinheads.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@Yellowdog . I have no clue, where you get those numbers. The country will thrive without Trump, and most economic advisors, that I’ve heard in the last day or so, think it could be beneficial to the economy. They noted that the market prefers stability and the obvious instabilities of Trump. They noted that his tweets are a massive headache for investors, and that the economies in Europe, Asia , really every country would breathe a collective sigh of relief. Without threats of trade wars, the markets should relax a bit.

Trump is REALLY squirming now, as his closest aids are getting plea deals, and will likely throw him under the bus. So. He is using his main tools of lying to stir up feat in his base. Sounds like you ate this sandwich too….

Markets are driven by much larger factors.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

But Trump SEZ the world will end if I’m not in charge of the USA (Russian extension) !

It is Sammmich of $h*T ! @Yellowdog

ScienceChick's avatar

I would hope someone would just hand him a pistol.

Yellowdog's avatar

Me too! If he would shoot YOU with it :)

(Kidding, of course)

I think the opposite will happen. Tariffs will go back to what it was and normalcy will be felt across the globe and investors will loosen their belts a little. Of course there will be some pain felt by those companies that were depending on Trump loosening all EPA rules so they could cheaply dump their crap everywhere, but I still think most of them were still taking their businesses in other nations where pay was also cheap. So maybe no real difference there.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Trump’s exodus, would not change his work.

Pandora's avatar

^ It will if they get some actual competent people to replace these fools. Trump doesn’t hire people who have actual experience. Just people who will kiss his rear. Real professionals won’t go near him. They know it will be the end of their career. I think Pences may suck but I think he will fire all those tainted people and hire real professionals that will make him look good.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^I would LOVE, for you to be correct. I will not hold my breath though….
