Senator John McCain has died. Do you want to share any thoughts?

Asked by chyna (51298points) August 26th, 2018

So much information is coming out about him. One of the things I heard that surprised me is that his mom is still alive and is 106 years old.

Would you like to share anything that you knew or have heard about him?

^^Very poor taste. He was the American politician I respected the most despite his being a Republican. One story I didn’t know about him was when the North Vietnamese offered to release him McCain refused unless every US prisoner captured before him was released first.

“poor taste”? Really? The media is falling all over themselves to make this fucking war monger imperialist into some kind of saint. John McCain’s life work was bad. We shouldn’t be celebrating him and pretending that he was something he wasn’t.

@notnotnotnot Please don’t trash my thread. If you don’t have anything good to say, remove yourself from it.

notnotnotnot's avatar

Ok. Fair enough. The guy was a monster. I’ll drop out of thread so complete nonsense can proceed.

‘Would you like to share anything that you knew or have heard about him?’ and then…. ’ If you don’t have anything good to say, remove yourself from it.’ Maybe you should have stipulated, ‘Positive things only’ in your original question.

(I’m a member of the LGBTQ community. He worked against me and mine in the US.)

chyna's avatar

Yes I should have. I’ll add it now. Positive things only.

flutherother's avatar

@ScienceChick His views on the LGBTQ community did evolve over time

He was a great guy.
When compared to the rest of his ilk.
That is as positive as is justifiable by my conscience.

I’m sorry your thread got trashed, @chyna.

I gave serious consideration to voting for him….Then he chose Palin. A choice that both of us regretted I believe.

I may not have always agreed with him but, unlike most politicians, he had principles that he followed, and did not act out of political expediency.

I would ask the moderation team to start a new thread. Trashing a war hero the day after he died is disgusting. I’m not even a republican but I know not to be a jerk like some of you are being.

Prayers to ease the family’s grief. Maybe he is better off now.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

He was probably the only rep/con I respected, because at times he truly seemed for the people not the lobbyists and big money that seems to rule the Republicans.

Dutchess_III's avatar

He was principled. I respected him a great deal. He was the only republican I would have considered voting for.

chyna's avatar

I’m not a republican either, but had nothing but respect for him.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I had my issues with him. But I did respect him, and I hope he journeys well…

Dutchess_III's avatar

I regret not voting for him in 2000.

My big take on McCain is that he was a throwback to an era when integrity mattered. The catastrophe of his political carrer is that he was wed to a party wherein such considerations now count for very little and such horrors as Trump or Pallin now define the routine.

seawulf575's avatar

@stanleybmanly unfortunately, it wouldn’t matter which party he was in. Integrity stopped long ago.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Perhaps. But it was particularity intriguing to witness his difficulty campaigning in the face of his party’s wide adherence to such nonsense as Obama’s Nigerian birth and supposed devotion to Islam.

flutherother's avatar

@seawulf575 Integrity hasn’t stopped it’s just not always there where it matters most.

Dutchess_III's avatar

John McCain let his intelligence guide him.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Those who might believe McCain unworthy of hero status are probably doomed to witness his assured elevation to such through the now forced contrast of the man against our fool of a President, who even NOW lacks the sense to accord the man his due. Trump’s behavior regarding McCain illustrates PERFECTLY the dificulties confronting a man of integrity and party loyalty. How is it possible for anyone with a sense of propriety to publicly support a man of such contemptible pettiness.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Trump seems to find ways of going lower, than low. I can’t think of much that would surprise me anymore…

trump is nothing but a spoiled, whiney little brat. He’s throwing a fit because he didn’t get invited to the party and the other popular kids did. I don’t know who trump thinks is going to “suffer” from his petulance.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Lets not bring The Don Father in on this thread, McCain was a good man, nothing like The Don Father.
McCain actually seemed to be for the people that voted him in office, not the Lobbyists and big money that the rest of the rep/cons bow down to.
