What was the last good thing you did for someone that made you feel good about yourself?

Asked by trudacia (2513points) August 19th, 2008

Seems to be a slow night on fluther. Thought I’d pose a personal question to everyone….. perhaps we can all be inspired by your good deeds and learn a little more about each other.

Have you recently performed a selfless act? Did your good deed pay off? Were you the one rewarded in the end?

Forgive me if this has been asked before. I searched and could not find anything similar.

I pleased my wife. That felt good. At least I think I pleased her.

I always like to talk my friends through their times of need. Usually helps them, and makes me feel better to see them happy. I’m now finding out that most of them don’t return the favor.

As far as selfless goes… I try to talk to this one nice old couple when they come into my work. Today the old man started to talk about the play his grandson was in. I think they just like having somebody listen. They’re sweethearts.

I saw a lady on the side of the road with a flat tire a few weeks ago. She was on her cell phone and I figured she was calling someone to help her out, so I stopped and changed her tire. Turns out, she and her husband had just moved to town from up North, and she was on the phone with him. He was going to have to leave work and drive about 30 minutes across town to change her tire.

After I was done, I welcomed her to town, and she gave me a gift card to the local movie theater, which was nice, since when I stopped, I was on my way to pick up my son to take him to a movie. Win-win-win.

I sat with a shut-in yesterday. Tomorrow I am going to the market for my mother. Thurs I will bring her food and help her take a shower, since she chipped a bone in her ankle. Friday I go back to shut-in’s to replace my sister, who has suddenly another family “must do,” Today I watered my neighbor’s plants on his deck.

I emptied the litter box for he-who-must-be-obeyed.

I enjoy all this since it might be me needing assistance down the road. Luckily I still function pretty well.

Three of my friends and I were climbing onto the top of our old junior high school. Two were a head of me, then myself, then one behind me. After I got up to the roof, the friend below me was scared of having to climb onto a little ledge and then boost herself to the top. She was afraid she would fall. I leaned over the edge, told her to grab my hand and that I wasn’t going to just leave her there while we walked around the rooftops. She said I was a good friend and let me help pull her up.

There’s a girl I work with going through some tough times. Her boyfriend lost his job so its up to her to pay the rent and all the bills but she doesn’t make enough. Their rent has been late once already so she didn’t have alot of money for groceries/personal items. She even told me that they were sharing deodorant because they didn’t have any money to buy a new stick for him. When I say they have no money I mean none, not even a couple dollars. So I went to wal-mart and bought her a basket of his and her’s deodorant, lotion, bodywash, toothpaste, etc. and a $25 gift card to a supermarket nearby. She was so happy and it really helped them out. And I was just happy to see her happy!

On the way to work a man got on the bus without the right change. No one had change and the driver was going to put him off the bus. I gave him the fare. I do this every so often. Hopefully if I ever need the fare someone will help me out too.

@nayeight, That was very kind of you. What a nice thing to do.

Thanks Carla! Yeah, she was slipping into a deep depression over the whole thing. She came to work so sad and crying all the time. I just really wanted to help her out. Her car was reposessed too so sometimes if we have the same shift I give her a ride home or to work. I think I realized how lucky I am to have what I have and that I should share my luck with others who aren’t as fortunate. My dad bought me a new car, I have two part-time jobs but I live at home and only pay my cell phone bill. I really don’t have any expenses so why not help out someone who could really use the money, you know?

I gave someone a band-aid on the el the other day. I kind of wish I had a more exciting story, but that’s about all it was. She was sitting across from me and I noticed her foot was bleeding (broken blister) and her hem fell right into the sore. I’ve had that happen before and it hurts. Plus your hem gets bloody. I always carry a first aid kid with me, so I popped it open and handed her a band-aid. She thanked me for it and we went about our own business.

@empress—Good deeds are good deeds regardless of magnitude.

I think I might have negated my good Karma from above by failing to act today. I saw a woman walking on the side of the road in tropical storm conditions and I didn’t offer her a ride. I wanted to, but, you know, making a U-turn is a hassle, I was in the wrong lane, she did have an umbrella…

Now I feel like shit.
