What is this code that suddenly populated an Excel spreadsheet on my computer?

Not sure what I hit, but suddenly there was this. What is it and what does it do?

That looks a lot like a list of Standard Industrial Codes (SIC Codes). From this book

How it got onto your workstation, I have no idea.

But the data is actually pretty valuable.

Can I sell it on Facebook?! :D

There are 81,300 lines of it! It does say “Bizcodes” on it.

It’s not valuable to sell. The list is freely available.

What does it do?

What does it do?

1)
Say you were selling a service that you know would be valuable to hot dog stands and coal mines.

You could buy a list of companies that have been tagged with the hot dog and coal mine SICs and bombard them with mail, email, and phone calls.

2)
Say you are the US Commerce Dept and you want to see which sectors of the economy are doing well and which are not. You collect data on millions of companies, and then group the data by SICs.

Stuff like that.
