What do you think of the new alert system that would allow the president to send notifications to every cell phone in America?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) September 15th, 2018

Why would they even do that? Trump couldn’t begin to handle that responsibility. Plus we already have alerts in place for every thing we need.

Screw that. I don’t want to give access to my phone to Lying, cheating, repulsive Don.

I think it is a redundant and foolish concept. No president is solely privy to information that Americans need to know. It would go far to diminish the perceived importance of any kind of alert.

If you are a tin hat conspiracy theorist, you might observe that this is yet another step towards the military takeover of the US.

But to be fair, this initiative started around 2005–2006, under Bush II I believe, as an emergency broadcast thing, and it has taken them 12 years to get it going. Speaks well for the government, doesn’t it?

Like any technology, it needs to be tested. I’m not against it being tested once.

However, if Donnie the Dummy starts sending out non-emergency SMS messages, people will ignore them and be pissed off at him. So I see this as a once in a decade sort of test.

If it could be used responsibly, it seems fine. I doubt it could be used responsibly in practice. Also, what’s the penalty if it’s abused?

But we get all the alerts we need. We get Amber alerts, we get weather alerts…how would this be special?

LadyMarissa's avatar

IF his tweets are any indication of what he’d send, I want the option to BLOCK any notification from him!!!

What? My old land-line isn’t good enough???

LadyMarissa's avatar

Sorry, he doesn’t get the same satisfaction!!!

Unless I could turn it off, I wouldn’t be a fan.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Apparently we aren’t allowed to opt out. Groan. However, news articles are saying he won’t be “allowed” to use it like Twitter.
It’s a sad day when the President of the United States is told he is not “allowed” to do something because he can’t figure it out for himself.

MrGrimm888's avatar

He doesn’t know much about being the POTUS. Sadly, he has the ability to hire dozens of people who could advise him. But you have to tell him what he wants to hear….

LadyMarissa's avatar

Telling Trump that he’s not “allowed” to do anything simply means he will act like a 2 y/o & just “have to” do it!!! One thing for sure…I DON’T “have to” answer it!!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, you won’t know it’s him until you look at it. I would imagine there is no option to respond.

LadyMarissa's avatar

At present, IF I don’t recognize the number/name I either don’t answer or don’t open. ONLY peeps in my contacts get my time & effort. I block everyone else. Stops a lot of headaches!!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

You won’t be able to “answer.” It’s only used for extreme emergencies for getting information out to every one quickly.

kritiper's avatar

“Everyone?” Only those with cell phones!

Dutchess_III's avatar

The question specifies ”...everyone with a cell phone.” Or, I should say, it’s sent to every cell phone. Not to every person.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I think it would overwhelm the telephone system and interfere with emergency first responders communication. Like in sept 11/2001.

chyna's avatar

@kritiper 224 million smart phone users in 2018. He could reach out and touch a lot of people that way. And how many are kids that do not need to be scared because Trump can’t keep his fingers to himself?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I somehow don’t think it will actually be Trump doing the texting. I would think it would really be FEMA. This just doesn’t really make any sense.

canidmajor's avatar

And what could he possibly have to say that would not be better served by local authorities notifying us?

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^ Right? Exactly.

kritiper's avatar

Again I say, “What? My old land line isn’t good enough???”
Why should I be discriminated against???

elbanditoroso's avatar

The message will be:

“I, President Trump have declared martial law over the United States. All police and Army are activated. Shoot to kill orders are approved to any who disobey. All Muslims must report to authorities by November 1 2018. All Jews must report to authorities by December 1 2018. All blacks and hispanics must register and report by January 15 2019. More information available of Fox News.”

Humpty Trumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Trumpty made a great call
All the king’s horses
And all the king’s men
Couldn’t put America back together again.

”...and a great fart was heard across the land…”
