Everyone always asks about favorites, so let’s go the opposite direction. What book do you dislike the most, and why?

Any book that is a previous edition (with the exception of first editions) especially outdated computer programming books. I hate math text-books that progress too fast. Without explaining what it is used for and a general background. However the Great Gatsby I never finished and blocked out from reading. Someone told me the jist of the story and I will read again later. I also stopped reading Lord of the Rings at page 70 or so. Will read it all if I break a leg and am incapacitated.

Fountainhead.

I find that people who are fans of her work are worse than bible-thumpers. Depending on my mood, I might be less critical of them if they are still in grade school.

While most of her body of work is a poorly-written brochure for objectivism, I find this book particularly grating because of its portrayal of architects.

The Bible.

I’ve started to read some stinkers in my day, but the two that I literally tossed aside was ‘The Book of Mormon’ and ‘Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus’. Also, I started reading one of the Hunger Games books only to be totally disappointed to learn it was on the same level as ‘Twilight’. I had no idea it was a ‘YA’ series. Oh, while I’m here, Dan Brown is crap. Huh… who knew I had such dislike for some books.

Raum stole mine. But Atlas Shrugged is every bit as repulsive.

At the moment it’s The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I read it for one book club but skimmed it and now my other book club is doing it. I hate the characters, the length, the morals, and the plot.

Jeez, @janbb I really liked The Goldfinch! Chacun a son gout!

I read Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections, and when I was done with it, realized I really didn’t like any of the characters and that there was nothing redeeming about the story.

When Franzen’s Freedom came out, I bought it and read about 100 pages, and realized everyone was truly awful, made terrible decisions, and elicited no sympathy in any way, shape, or form. I donated it to a book sale.

Anything by Dean Koontz. Bleh.

@zenvelo Agree about Franzen – but you liked the characters in The Goldfinch? We must talk.

Since I don’t read very often, I don’t have a favorite & I also don’t dislike any book!!!

I hate the fifth edition of the D&D players handbook. They got rid of the wish and miracle spells.
