How does one go about finding a will?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) October 19th, 2018

I am sure my mother’s will (my sister’s version of it, anyway) has been filed with Sedgwick county. Where do I go to get a copy of it?
What all is involved in getting a copy?
Thanks.

In our area, it’s the Recorder of Deeds at the county courthouse.

Would the will be filed in the state and county in which it was written, or in the state and county that she died in?

@Dutchess_III I honestly don’t remember that answer, I’m sorry.

@Dutchess_III
If they can’t help you , then perhaps they can redirect you to the right agency?
Its a start.

Well, the site was on e of those that lure you in, then want you to pay for the information. But thanks. I’ll get it figured out.

I haven’t tried it; but, I’ve been told that you can go online for your county of record & see it. I can’t tell you how to get there; but maybe @Inspired_2write‘s link will get you started.

Oops, just saw where you said it didn’t work. Call your local court house or county clerk & ask them for the website address that can help you.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’ll do that. Thanks.

I sent an email to the county clerk. Good of a place to start as any.

This is turning out to be easier than I expected. Sent email to county clerk. Clerk told me to contact the court house at 316–123-4567. They told me to email my request to micro@ks.org (or something.) I’m thinking “micro” is short for “micro fiche.” We will see. I’m pretty sure they are public documents.

@Dutchess_III Yep, that was my job, scanning each days items onto microfiche for the title company, developing and storing. haha, kinda fun.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Was that recently? Had they not heard of computer storage?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III haha, it was awhile back….and a pain in the patootie. I loved reading the wills though.

Maybe I’ll send you this one, see what you think. It will probably make you sick. It would make any normal person sick.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III I’ve seen a lot of really nasty ones, like ugly to their family. So I’d love that lol.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, I would exactly call this one “nasty.” Just greed unchained from a woman who already had more money and assets than she could ever need.
