How do the Native American populations in Canada fare, compared to the indigenous people of what is now the United States?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) November 30th, 2018

This has been brought up twice today. The first time was there was a Facebook post that suggested the way Canada handled the issues was vastly superior to the way the early European Americans did. It was supposedly more fair and humane.

However, later on, in a completely different forum, someone else mentioned the Native Americans in Canada, and suggested they have the same kind of problems many have here: substandard housing, problem with clean drinking water, etc.

I always thought idea of eminent domain in the US was a big problem when it came to being fair to the Native Americans, but apparently Canada has it’s version of eminent domain.

Can you help me untangle this?

Good question.

I know that they were often treated just as badly. I remember reading about Native children being ripped from families and taken to schools where they were “Westernized” and often abused, and I assumed at first it was talking about the U.S., but this was Canada. :( I don’t know much about how they fare now.
