Whatever happened to all of the hordes of migrants coming up from South America?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) January 22nd, 2019

They seem to have just vanished into thin air. Or was it somehow staged? What’s going on?

They’re still there, headed this way. It does take a while to walk 2000 miles or more…

This is the most recent article I can find on it. It suggests that they did make it to our border… ”...after walking in a caravan for weeks in late 2018, Central American migrants were met with tear gas lobbed over the U.S. border.”

Every article I have read, has stated that immigration is down 20% over the last ten years.

They magically ceased to be a threat to America’s very existence the day after the mid-terms.

There were a few things from that article that hit me. This statement in particular was interesting: Over the 7 year period from 2010 to 2017 the illegal immigrants coming to the US dropped by 1.3.million. It didn’t drop to that number, it dropped by that number. That means tons more are still coming in. There was a lot about this statement that made me scratch my head a little. First, somewhere during the Obama administration the government stopped releasing the numbers for illegal immigrants. I remember the numbers were going up and up and up until suddenly they held steady at 11 million for 6 years. Unlikely. But this statement tells me the government does indeed track these numbers and are, therefore, aware of and in some ways complicit in, the problem. Another issue is that if the numbers were dropping by 200k per year, how many are actually entering our country? That is a lot of people. What other country in the world deals with an influx of illegal aliens to this extent? And how is this acceptable? And lastly, the article states these numbers are from Mexicans crossing illegally. It specifically states improving economic conditions in Mexico as a potential reason for the drop. That doesn’t include all the other aliens from other Central American nations. While the article states the numbers are dropping and offers some reasons for the drop, that doesn’t mean there aren’t still hordes of people marching towards our border or sneaking across.
The argument that it isn’t as bad as it was so it isn’t a problem is a bit of a misleading statement.

This wasn’t about immigration in general. It was about the supposed hordes of invaders that were coming to get us. That’s all they talked about. Then, suddenly, they’re gone.

Agreed. They were painted as an invading army. Inhuman. Sneaky criminals, bound on raping, and pillaging, and of course they just want to live off of welfare.

@Dutchess_III they’re not gone. If you were down there you’d see them. It may appear they’re gone since tv isn’t showing them as much as they used to But they are all still there, some in tents, some in buildings and there are thousands of them. Men, women and children.

Many applied for Mexican citizenship. They walked in large groups (in the daytime ) for safety reasons.
They are asylum seakers. They have EVERY right to apply under law. Sorry they’re brown…

The thing that keeps tickling my brain is if it was a made up crisis to win the election, you would think whoever made it up would be redoubling the hysteria in order to get the wall built. Why isn’t that happening?
