Some of my DVDs "skip" when playing. How do I correct that?

I handle my DVDs so carefully, yet they will skip on occasion or “freeze,” and they don’t do so in all of my DVD players; only in certain ones.
Can they be repaired at all, or do I have to purchase new ones all the time?
This reminds me of the 45 RPM records I had, before CDs were created, because skipped all the time, unless you placed a quarter on top of the tone arm.
