What is the healthiest bread I can eat that doesn't cost a small fortune?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) April 30th, 2019

I read that Ezekiel bread is THE #1 healthiest. Thought I’d give it go…BUT NOT AT $19.00 A LOAF!

What are some more affordable alternatives?

Try “Dave’s Killer Bread.”

ragingloli's avatar

You could bake your own.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’ll see if I can find it @jca2. Thanks.

Not that motivated @ragingloli.

ragingloli's avatar

Do you not have any bakeries?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Not here in town. I imagine they do in Wichita or Ponca.

Cracked wheat.
Be sure to check the nutrition label for sugar content per serving. You want 1 gram per serving.

ragingloli's avatar

Oh wow. Not a single bakery in town?
No wonder you are a third world country.

janbb's avatar

@ragingloli It’s only Kansas and much of the South that are third world countries!

Hey! We’re gettin’ better. We elected a democratic governor and things they are a changing. She’s going to push for the Medicaid expansion. The Kansas Supreme Court just said regarding abortion women can make their own damn decisions!. So there.

mazingerz88's avatar

What exactly is a healthy bread? Yes I have no idea what that is. Lol

jca2's avatar

Walmart here has Dave’s. Check Walmart. It’s about 4 or 5 dollars per loaf. They have bagels, too.

canidmajor's avatar

You say you’re not motivated, but there are now some infinitely easier ways to make your own that provide a really good loaf with very little effort. You can put that dutch oven to good use.
I make a loaf a week (sometimes more). Good crumb, nice texture. If you want, I’ll pass it on.
I love the super easy in stuff like this.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I did check with my Walmart. It says “Out of stock.” But that was online. I’ll look next time I go there.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Thanks @canidmajor. You can send the recipe if you want.

If you have a Trader Joe, I recommend the Milton’s brand multigrain bread they have (the purple bags, are my preference to the red ones). It’s sort of like Dave’s Killer Bread, and I like it about as well, maybe better, but I think it costs about half as much (depending on where you’d get DKB).

Here is a list of the best, and worst breads. Depending on where you buy them, they will only cost you a buck, or 3 for most of them. I’ve never seen the Ezekial bread for the price you listed. That’s way too high. I often get the Nature’s Harvest and Nature’s own 100% whole wheat loaves at the 99 Cent Only Store.

Walmart out here in CA had Ezekiel bread for $6.98.

You don’t need anything that fancy, or expensive. Just look a bread that is 100% whole grain, low, or no added sugar, no added high fructose corn syrup, and high in protein and fiber.

Depends on what you consider healthy. When my kidney function dipped below normal I read up a little, and it said that people with low functioning kidneys should avoid whole grains. WTH?! I never would have assumed that. Here’s a link for that if anyone is interested. I have no idea if it can hurt the kidneys, or if it is just recommendations for people already with diagnosed low kidney function. I want to read up on it more myself.

Personally, I like Health Nut by Arnold, or it might be Health Nut by Oroweat where you live. In my market they often have buy one get one free, and I just freeze one for later. I like their potato and country white also, but they probably don’t qualify as healthy for this Q.

Oops, I think I forgot to post my link to the best and worst breads.

Here it is:

Dutchess_III's avatar

Don’t have a Trader Joes @Zaku.

jca2's avatar

I see Milton’s at the supermarket, too.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Thanks guys. BTW, do you think the Amazon link in my details is a misprint on their part, or am I missing something?

jca2's avatar

I looked on Amazon and all the prices for that bread are similar, @Dutchess_III. Hard to comprehend spending that much on a loaf of bread.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ezekiel+bread&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

Dutchess_III's avatar

I guess it’s not a typo. That is simply insane.

Kardamom's avatar

Apparently it matters where you are located, as to how much that bread costs online.

Dutchess_III's avatar

So what prices do you show when you type “Ezikeial bread” in to Amazon, @Kardamom?

Kardamom's avatar

I see it for $18.99 on Amazon, but at Walmart, in store her in CA for $6.98.

Check your Walmart and Target and see what it costs there.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I see the same thing @Kardamom. But my Walmart sz it’s out of stock.

Kardamom's avatar

Hmmm, maybe you can check some of the other grocery stores.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I will next time I’m in one of them. Rick usually does the food shopping.

janbb's avatar

There are plenty of healthy breads that don’t cost $19. Just look for a whole grain bread that doesn’t have added sugar.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, for the yeast to ferment you have to add sugar. But there isn’t enough sugar in a loaf of bread to make any real difference at all, especially not in just a slice or two.

canidmajor's avatar

Well, no, the yeast can bring a pretty good rise without any added sugar, the flour carbs convert to glucose which does the trick.

jca2's avatar

Ezekiel bread ingredients, cut and pasted from their site: Organic Sprouted Wheat, Filtered Water, Organic Sprouted Barley, Organic Sprouted Millet, Organic Malted Barley, Organic Sprouted Lentils, Organic Sprouted Soybeans, Organic Sprouted Spelt, Fresh Yeast, Organic Wheat Gluten, Sea Salt.

Zaku's avatar

Even at Whole Wallet… er, Whole Foods, in Seattle, I see Ezekiel bread for $5.39.

jca2's avatar

Next time I’m at my local Wally Mart I’ll check the price of it. Like @janbb said, though, any decent whole grain bread that has no added sugar will be a close substitute. Many of the whole grain breads do add sugar to make them more palatable to people, since many Americans like things sweet.

janbb's avatar

If you’re not concerned about some added sugar, the choices would be even greater.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’ll take a gander next time I’m at the store.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Right now we’re working on a loaf of yummy bread from a Greek bakery in Frontenac Kansas! So good! And probably just awful for you. But I’m still going to eat a slice every day, with real butter, until it’s gone.

Kardamom's avatar

Look at Nature’s Harvest, and Nature’s own, whole wheat, which are both sold at The 99 Cent Only Stores in CA.

longgone's avatar

I just tried an insanely simple recipe yesterday:

1) Mix up a pound of whole grain flour, a sachet of instant yeast, and a little under a tablespoon of salt.

Optional: add any nuts, seeds, or spices you like. I’ve tried sesame and oats so far.

2) Then, with a spoon, stir in 2¼ cups of lukewarm water.

3) Done. No kneading. No rising. In a greased loaf pan, put your bread in the cold(!) oven. Set it to 350° Fahrenheit, take it out after an hour.

janbb's avatar

@longgone That sounds easy! I guess the yeast is activated as the oven temp rises. How did it taste?

longgone's avatar

@janbb That’s right. It was very good. Fluffy. With a whole spoon of salt it was a little too salty for me, but about ⅔ worked great!

jca2's avatar

I was in Trader Joe’s last night (Connecticut) and they had Ezekiel raisin bread, $4.99 and regular whole wheat, $4.49.
