How does the belief in hell affect the way we live our lives?

If you believe in hell does it deter you from doing bad things?

It doesn’t seem to sway people from doing bad deeds. A friend of mine seems to think that just because Jesus supposedly died on the cross for our sins, we can get away with just about anything with no fear of going to hell.

In my opinion, if fear is the only reason why you’re a good person then you’re not a good person.

I have never refrained from doing something wrong because I was afraid if punishment. That is how a child thinks.
I refrain from doing wrong because it’s wrong. That is maturity.

It reminds one that one cannot get away with evil deeds done in this life and will be punished in another.
