Writers: Do you ever get stuck on subjects, topics, or projects that really aren't publishable?

I don’t know if there is a name for this.

I suppose many writers do writing and journal-keeping never particularly intend to share their writing with anyone else.

But what about the condition, kind of the opposite of writers’ block, where one writes proficiently and prolifically— but about topics that are more of the interest of the writer than what could be understood enjoyed by someone else?

Maybe its more about one’s personal experiences, or about topics that are not what one would want to share with others—when one’s goal is to write short stories or a novel for profit or at least contribute something of one’s work.

It used to be that I never liked to show anything until it was finished or it was ready to be published or at least copied. But I find myself stuck writing to perfection or some other standard, yet never again looking at again or showing to anyone else, or keeping in personal journals. I really waste a lot of time doing this. Its as if I don’t like writing for anyone else’s standards because it isn’t really what I like personally.

There’s nothing wrong with writing for one’s self I suppose. But I often get bogged down with this mindset and cannot discipline myself to write for publication.

One write for oneself not for others. If you enjoy writing then go for it and the continuous writing is the goal of not stopping as somewhere in that writing a story or more will come to the surface and you can continue with that story at length.Never write for another meaning have your goal is to write for yourself and “If” others are interested then all the better.
One cannot get rich in writing a novel overnight even the best of writers on the national market never got rich until years many years later after someone made his books into movies ( Michael Crichton..wrote Jurassic Park, Westworld and more).

I have written many things with no intent whatsoever of having them published.

When I was hanging out with a certain group of people, and smoking herb was something we did regularly, I contributed several items to an ongoing collection. We congregated most often at the home of one person. He had spiral notebooks on hand for anyone who wanted to share thoughts and feelings on paper. There were artists among us who were quite talented. One who frequently made sketches within some volumes eventually painted a mural on the host’s basement walls, part of which showed up in blacklight, giving the appearance of things free-floating in a black void.

There were doodles, sketches, poetry, short stories, letters to people never meant to be sent, whatever anyone felt like adding at the time. There was one rule, like it or not,no pages could be taken out. All notebooks were to stay intact and in the possession of our host.
That was decades ago. I have no idea whatever happened to those volumes. If the man has passed, I can’t imagine what would be the reaction of whoever found them.
The rule of nothing entered may be thrown away I decided I would apply to myself. No matter how bad it sees at the time of writing, I keep all. It shows me later where my heart was over the years.

Writing things you never intend to publish can be like having a secret friend.

I have a variety of flash drives now where I keep what I write, and various photos. My intent is when they are all filled, I will fasten them to a neck chain, sort of an oversized charm bracelet.

Write whatever you want, however much you want, with whatever intentions which suit you.

Who’s to say your writings aren’t publishable? If the topic and the style interest you others may also be interested. If your writing doesn’t interest you then what is the point?
