Do you have any tips on staying awake from 8am to 8am June 26-June 27?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24453points) June 24th, 2019

I have a medical test that requires me to be sleep deprived for 24 hours.

Any tips would be helpful. I can’t have caffeine in my system.

Have family or friend stay with you to do something you enjoy. Boardgames, card games, movies?

Get a good night’s sleep the night of the 25th. Stay hydrated on the 26th. Avoid sugary foods and anything processed or with a lot of carbs, because that will cause an insulin reaction that will make you sleepy.

In the small hours of the morning, walk around outside. Stay up on your feet. Take a cool (not cold) water bath. And get dressed for your appointment at 6:30 a.m. and head to the medical office.

Star Wars/Alien marathon.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Will you be monitored or alone in your apartment?

Dutchess_III's avatar

That’s rough, man. Well, just do it as best you can. Surf the web. I play spider solitare on my desk top.

anniereborn's avatar

Play music that you really enjoy that is at least somewhat peppy.

KNOWITALL's avatar

I’d set the alarm for every 30 min.

Darth_Algar's avatar

I suppose some form of amphetamine is out of the question?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well…he can’t have caffeine in his system so…...

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I will hang out at the Tim Horton’s and eat honey crullers when they open at 5am. It is one block from the hospital where I get my test .

Dutchess_III's avatar

Perfect.

May I ask what kind of procedure you are having?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Dutchess_III Sure. It’s a sleep deprivation brain scan. EEG or ECG. Not sure of the name

Dutchess_III's avatar

Pretty sure it’s an EEG…Electro Encepherogram or…whatever. Without googling.

I am so glad they are finally giving you the once over.

House cleaning is a good start. When that gets tiresome, switch to video games.

I don’t live on a 24 hour day anymore. I am up twenty to thirty hours, then sleep ten to twelve.
If it gets real tough during the night, try an activity you are not so very good at. For the sake of example, let’s assume it is playing well with a yo-yo.
Concentrating on how to learn a new trick will help you ignore sleepy feelings.

Inspired_2write's avatar

I will keep you awake..will call and talk on computer and or phone.

Fluther?

Save up some recorded shows on your DVR or have some good DVD movies.

Sleep whenever you can the days leading up to it so you don’t go into it sleep deprived.

24 hours is tough. By hour 20 I’d probably fall asleep even if I didn’t want to.

Don’t drive anywhere afterwards until you get adequate sleep.

Do you usually have caffeine during the day? If yes, and you don’t have any for 24 hours you’ll probably start getting the killer headache, although you might squeeze by and get lucky if you have some caffeine as soon as you are allowed. Be ready with some headache meds if you start to feel it coming on, hopefully you won’t need it.

@Inspired That’s sweet!

@RedDeer Let us know and we can check in here more or see if chat works!

kritiper's avatar

LOTS of strong, black coffee. And load up on chocolate covered coffee beans. Be sure to get LOTS of sleep/naps the day before.

Patty_Melt's avatar

I tried chat during the weekend. I had no trouble getting in or out, but if I tried to talk, it gave me the boot

jca2's avatar

@kritiper: He can’t have caffeine.

Owentiffie's avatar

If you’re the type of person who likes video games, go at it! Games can help you stay up for more than a few days.

kritiper's avatar

@jca2 He’ll never make it, then…or score some cross-tops…

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh, he can make it @kritiper. I did without caffeine. All I needed was to have the ever loving SHIT scared out of me at bedtime, and I was up the rest of the night. It was over 24 hours before I finally got to bed again, after hosting a family reunion. That was just 3 years ago, too. When I was a kid all it took was a good party. I am not a kid any more, though.

Remain standing the whole time.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Ok Hour one of 24 . Had a shower.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Hour two had two chugs of milk. Looking for YouTube videos.

jca2's avatar

Don’t drink too much milk, @RedDeerGuy1. Milk has tryptophan in it and will make you sleepy.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Or eat turkey sandwiches! Or light candles, or dim the lights, or take a bath…..haha!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Turkey and chicken put me to sleep. So do candles and baths. Why would you suggest he do that?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III (sigh) I was saying not to, like jca2 did….

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I fell alseep. I’m up now

Dutchess_III's avatar

WTH…do you normally fall asleep in the middle o f the day? This is gonna be hard if you couldn’t even stay awake during the DAY.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yes. I normally sleep from 10pm to 8am then 10am- 4pm. I just thought about taking a short nap and fell into a deep sleep.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

At least it was a wonderful sleep. I will order out now.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Will try to stay up from now on.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Don’t eat enough to feel full. Eat only enough to stop feeling hungry.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

At hospital now early for the test. 2 hour wait. Stayed up from 4pm to now.

LostInParadise's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 , Is that correct: You normally sleep from 10pm to 8am then 10am- 4pm? That would mean that you are awake for only 8 hours a day, which is about the amount of time most people are asleep. Are your doctors aware of this? Is this a symptom of your illness, a side effect of your medication, or just a pattern you have fallen into? Would you be able to sleep less in order to hold down a full-time job?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@LostInParadise Its a side effect of my medication. Will ask my dr. Today if he can tweek my meds.

jca2's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1: I’m thinking it’s probably not good for your circulation to be lying in bed 16 hours per day, every day.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@jca2
He doesn’t sleep 16 hours a day other times he is busy with meetings, appointments, etc

Patty_Melt's avatar

From what he posted above, it adds up to sixteen hours per day.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@Patty_Melt

He approximated his usual off days when he doesn’t have meetings schedules and groups and other busy times.
He does go grocery shopping,attend doctor appointments, goes to the Post Office for packages that can’t be delivered to his mail box, goes out for ice cream, milkshakes etc, meets up with neighbor , attends employment seminars etc

He simply did not factor in that in his estimation.

Also he can’t sleep 16 hours a day as he lives near a busy hospital and ambulance and

Police sirens going off at all hours of the night.

Hence he requires longer sleep in the daytime..no noise.

Give him a break he doesn’t have to give people here a blow by blow description of his life only to be criticized .

There are so many factors that are involved that he does not have to reveal here, nor does he HAVE to, of all places?

He is TOO TRUSTING and gives too much information , that gets him more flak then bargained for.

By the way…I stayed up for those 20 + hours and it was very hard for me too, but we talked, texted and went online.
Around 4AM I went to bed and had to get up by 8am.
Could not sleep the next day until today..I made up the loss of sleep as I am sure he did too?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Inspired_2write Is correct. I’m grateful.

LostInParadise's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 gave a specific sleep schedule that he said he normally follows. It added up to 16 hours of sleep per day. He did not offer any clarification after people commented. Does he need his mother to interpret what he says? Are we to assume that anything he says is BS?

Darth_Algar's avatar

@Inspired_2write

So, should we not take @RedDeerGuy1‘s own statements at face value?

jca2's avatar

@LostInParadise @RedDeerGuy1 did say that his mother is correct.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Today I woke up at 4pm. It’s when I have nothing to do that I sleep in.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Might be a weekend thing. Sorry for the confusion.
