I used to live on Vermont St. just north of Franklin--excellent neighborhood, Los Feliz.

all of the above seem to be the regular response; however, i have some great friends that live in downtown la and they get lots of space, bike to most spots for their daily (work in the area) and are surrounded by artists hidden in warehouse spaces...not sure if that is what you want. and, yeah, venice is pretty sweet on the polar side o' things. best of luck
