Where have earwigs come from?

Asked by peggylou (1138points) July 29th, 2007

I don't remember them being around prior to, say, 1970. Where have they come from?

I can assure you, they existed prior to 1970. There are around 1,800 different variations of the Dermaptera order.

I remember reading somewhere that they are one of the oldest creatures around, kind of like sharks, unchanged for millions of years.

Peggylou, you were too busy to notice them before 1970.

@hossman! Do you remember them before 1970?

I remember them from the early '70s. I'm pretty sure they didn't just spring up from nowhere right before then.
