How was your experience having a job that was so routine you could have done it with your eyes closed?

Figuratively. Or literally if that’s truly the case. What was that job and how did you deal with the boredom and how mundane and numbing that job had become?

Way back when I was young, I landed a job that amounted to supervising 3 women in a department collating statistics. I was in no way qualified for the job and the 3 women knew that better than I. One of the 3 (the one who should have been promoted to supervisor) was good and pissed about it. So 4 days into the job I gathered the 3 of them into my office and told them point blank that I knew they’d been screwed, and that the hiring of an impudent kid as their boss was almost certainly due to the fact that I had a degree, they were women and nothing more. I continued by telling them that I had no plans to lord it over them, and that if they could grow to trust me, I would make it my business to back them up, and make their dreary jobs as tolerable as could be arranged. But there was more that I didn’t tell them. I could exude an air of competence like nobody’s business. THAT and a great wardrobe were my only assets, so I set about looking and acting the part as I tried to figure out just what it was “my” department did. We were fortunate in that we were sort of isolated in an obscure corner of the office building, but nevertheless, I arrived at the job one day (I tried to make a habit of arriving before my “crew”) when the 3 of them came in together giggling. The one that should have been boss smirked and asked “you wanna guess what the stenographers have nicknamed you?” I replied “genius?”. To which she whooped “nope. You’re the peacock!” And the 3 of them just cackled and roared another minute or 2 at my expense. I had made the coffee (as I did daily) and the 3 of them were busy filling their mugs, tossing in cream, sugar, whatever. The “boss” was moving in on the box of danish (which I also brought in every morning) when I snatched up the box, grabbed a marker and scribbled on the lid in ugly black letters “PEACOCK FOOD”. Then with the best air of snootiness I could manage, I tucked the box under my arm and strolled into my office, slamming the door behind me.

The most routine job I have is domestic work. Grocery shopping, cleaning, filing, cooking, and watering the plants. I don’t hate it all, but I do need to push myself to do some of it. If I was getting paid to do it, I would do it better, but I would probably dread it even more, because I would have to do it all even more perfectly, and more regularly. In a way I am paid, or let’s say rewarded, because when I do it well, my house is calmer, my husband is happier, and there is less hanging over my head.

Do I think about quitting? Well, I could get a maid to help (usually I could, but right now my husband isn’t working, but he also is helping me do some of the chores I hate most). I could work full time right now, and do much much less of the chores at home. My husband would pick up much more of them if I was working full time. I could eat out more, to avoid having to cook and clean the kitchen, but then I would gain weight, which I don’t want, plus it would get expensive.

In conclusion, the mundane wins for me over the obligation of having to actually get up and out of the house, or be on someone else’s schedule.

In interviews I have been known to say, that what gives me great satisfaction at work is being great at my job, rather than that typical “I like a challenge” answer.

@stanleybmanly I wish I had used my looks, dress, and degree more than I did to get ahead.

Way back in the day I was a movie usher. Taking tickets, walking the theaters during the movies, cleaning between shows….it was definitely not a challenging job. Several of us would create names and stories about the customers to amuse ourselves. We wouldn’t, of course, share these stories in front of the customers…just amongst ourselves.

Stared at a computer screen from 9 to 5 years ago. At exactly 3 pm I would be so sleepy I had to go sit on the toilet for a few minutes to close my eyes because we worked in this warehouse setting where everyone can see each other all the time. Lol
