Isn't the phrase "I'm sorry for your loss" grammatically incorrect?

Regarding the phrase “I’m sorry for your loss”.
Isn’t this grammatically incorrect?
How can you be sorry for a loss?
Shouldn’t the proper wording be: “I’m sorry about your loss” ... ?
